Honeycomb catalysts used in automobiles are easily damaged by vibration, impact, etc., so they are held in place by a cushioning material made by compressing and molding a complex of thin metal wires, such as knitted wire mesh. However, gaps remain between the wires in the cushioning material, which causes the exhaust gas to pass through the gaps and be discharged untreated outside the vehicle. For this reason, a method has generally been adopted in the past to maintain the sealing performance by installing a new sealing member made of expensive ceramic fiber or the like between the catalyst and the case serving as the catalyst holding member, in addition to the cushioning material.

The present invention provides a cushioning material for holding a honeycomb catalyst that has a simple structure but has sufficient sealing performance, and consists of an annular cushioning base material formed by compression molding a complex of fine metal wires, a donut-shaped plate portion, and Two metal annular bodies each having a cylindrical part extending from the inner circumferential end and the outer circumferential end of the plate part, the metal annular bodies being arranged such that the circumferential surfaces of the cylindrical parts are in sliding contact with each other. It is characterized by sandwiching the annular buffer base material. The invention will be explained below with reference to the drawings.

FIG. 1 is a sectional view showing the usage state of one embodiment of the cushioning material according to the present invention, and FIG. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the cushioning material used in FIG. 1. In the figure, 1 is a honeycomb catalyst held in a cylindrical case 2, and 3 is a buffer material that holds the outer periphery of the honeycomb catalyst, which is an annular buffer made of corrugated knitted knitted wire mesh. Reference numerals 4 and 5 are cushioning materials that hold the honeycomb catalyst in the longitudinal direction, of which 4 is a cushioning material made by simply compression molding a knitted knitted wire mesh, and 5 is a cushioning material according to the present invention. Of course, the same material as 5 may be used for the cushioning material 4 as well. The case 2 is fixed to the flange 6 while holding the honeycomb catalyst 1. The cushioning material 5 includes an annular cushioning base material 51 formed by compression molding of knitted wire mesh and a donut-shaped plate portion 521.
and two metal annular bodies 52 having a U-shaped cross section and having cylindrical parts 522, 523 and 532, 533 extending from the inner and outer peripheral ends of 531, respectively;
53. Cylindrical parts 522 and 5
32 are configured to face each other, and the inner circumferential surface of the cylindrical portion 522 and the outer circumferential surface of the cylindrical portion 532 are in sliding contact, and the cylindrical portions 523 and 533 are also in sliding contact with each other. When the buffer material 5 is arranged as shown in FIG.
are pressed against the end surfaces 21 of the two, so that they come into close contact with each other, and the respective close surfaces are sufficiently sealed. Furthermore, since the inner circumferential surface of the cylindrical portion 522 and the outer circumferential surface of the cylindrical portion 532 are in sliding contact with each other, sufficient sealing is achieved between the sliding surfaces. According to experiments by the present inventor, the gap between the sliding surfaces is 0.3 mm.
It was possible to maintain sufficient sealing performance for use even at a moderate level. On the other hand, since the metal annular bodies 52 and 53 have a structure that allows them to freely slide in the longitudinal direction of the honeycomb catalyst 1, the longitudinal direction of the honeycomb catalyst 1 is substantially held by the buffer base material 51. sufficient buffering properties can be maintained.

In the cushioning material according to the present invention, the plate portion 531 of the metal annular body 53 is in close contact with the end surface 11 of the honeycomb catalyst 1, and the plate portion 531 of the metal annular body 52 is in close contact with the end surface 11 of the honeycomb catalyst 1.
1 is in close contact with the end surface 21 of the case 2, and at the same time, the circumferential surfaces of the inner and outer cylindrical portions are in sliding contact to block the exhaust gas passage on the outer circumferential side of the honeycomb catalyst 1. . Therefore, as a modification of this embodiment, the following configuration (3rd to 6th
) can also be adopted. Parts equivalent to those in the first embodiment described above are given the same reference numerals and redundant explanations will be omitted.

That is, in order to prevent the buffer base material 51 and the metal annular bodies 52 and 53 from being separated before the buffer material 5 according to the present invention is installed between the honeycomb catalyst 1 and the case 2, as shown in FIGS. The protrusion 80 may be provided on the cylindrical portion 522 or 532 as shown in FIG.

In FIG. 5, the direction of the cylindrical part 522 is reversed so that it comes into sliding contact with the cylindrical part 532, and it goes without saying that the same effect as the above-mentioned embodiment can be obtained.

Furthermore, since the honeycomb catalyst 1 is made of ceramic, it is very fragile, and the corners 1a of the catalyst 1 are particularly easy to break. Therefore, as shown in FIG. It is more effective to provide the protrusion 100 so that the plate portion 531 does not come into contact with the corner portion 1a.

Since the honeycomb catalyst holding cushioning material of the present invention has the above-mentioned structure, it can seal exhaust gas without damaging the honeycomb catalyst, and can be manufactured at low cost, so it has no practical effect. It can be said that it is very large.
