Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the reliability and durability of a magnetic recording medium suitable for high-density recording by providing a thin magnetic metallic film having microprojections on the surface onto a substrate consisting of a nonmagnetic material and forming a diamond film or diamond-like carbon film on the surface of this thin magnetic metallic film. CONSTITUTION:The diamond-like carbon film is used for the protective metallic film for the medium. For example, PVC (fine particles of SiO2) 2 having <=100Angstrom size are dispersed in the surface of the substrate 1 consisting of a plastic film and the microprojections are formed of the PVC 2 on the surface of the Co-Ni-O recording layer 3 formed on the surface of the substrate 1 by a vapor deposition method. The diamond-like carbon film is formed by a PI-CVD method on the surface of the recording layer 3. The durability is thereby assured even if the projections of the surface of the recording layer are small.
