Abstract
PURPOSE:To efficiently accomplish decarburization in a short time, by regulating the length of flame so that it is longer in the former stage of decarburization and shorter in the latter stage at the time of providing heat to molten steel by means of an oxygen burner provided to the upper part of a furnace. CONSTITUTION:Heat is provided to molten steel in a furnace by means of a burner provided to the upper part of the furnace while agitating the molten steel by blowing a gas into the molten steel. At this time, the flame of the burner is made longer in the former stage of decarburization, by which combustion gas is blown against the molten steel to accelerate decarburization. In the latter stage of decarburization, the length of flame is made shorter to provide heat alone to the molten steel. As to the proper time for switching the length of flame, the point of time when C content in the molten steel is reduced and a change from oxygen-supply controlled decarburization to carbon-diffusion controlled decarburization in the molten steel is observed is preferred. By this method, the refining of steel, particularly, decarburization can be finished within a shortened period of time.
