Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a freshness-keeping agent free from release of adsorbed ethylene gas even if the temperature of outer atmosphere increases, by using, as essential components, an ethylene adsorbent selected from a polymer complex and an inorganic complex, a highly water-absorbing polymer, a polyvalent metal salt and NaHSO3. CONSTITUTION:The titled freshness-keeping agent contains, as essentially components, (A) an ethylene adsorbent, (B) a highly water-absorbing polymer such as starch-acrylonitrile graft polymer, (C) a salt of a polyvalent metal having a valency of >=2 and capable of taking a lower valency and (D) NaHSO3 capable of converting said polyvalent metal salt into a salt having decreased valency by reduction in the presence of water. the ethylene adsorbent A is a polymer complex produced e.g. by coordinating copper (I) chloride and AlCl3 to crosslinked polystyrene, an inorganic complex produced e.g. by coordinating copper (I) ion to zeolite, or their mixture. Since the freshness-keeping agent of the present invention has the above characteristics, it can preserve the freshness of fresh agricultural products in a package over a long period preventing the filling of ethylene gas in the package.
