Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a remedy for cachexia, containing beta-alanine or a salt thereof as an active ingredient and having removing action on side effects of chemotherapeutic agent, anti-AIDS chemotherapeutic agent, exposure to radiation, etc. CONSTITUTION:The aimed substance obtained by using beta-alanine or a salt thereof present in animal and plant tissues as an active ingredient and preparing a pharmaceutical by a conventional method. The remedy can be prepared in a form, such as injection, powder, granule, tablet or capsule. The dose thereof is 50mg/kg/day beta-alanine and about 3g per day for adult of 60kg body weight for subcutaneous administration. The beta-alanine effectively acts on leukopenia which is one of side effects caused by mitomycin C and 5-fluorouracil having strong side effects of cachectic reaction, such as collapse, akinesia, emesis, nausea, anorexia, reduction of body weight, symptosis or deterioration in biophylaxis, represented by chemotherapeutic agents and the remedy is effective in treating cachexia. The beta-alanine can be synthesized by a well-known method.
