Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled yarn useful as a material for space navigation, having high heat insulating properties and heat resistance, by spinning a spinning solution containing modified perhydropolysilazane to form modified perhydropolysilazane yarn and further calcining the yarn. CONSTITUTION:A basic compound such as tertiary amine is added to perhydropolysilazane, which is under a basic condition and subjected to polycondensation reaction in the presence (or absence) of ammonia or hydrazine to form modified perhydropolysilazane. Then the modified perhydropolysilazane is incorporated with a solvent inert to the modified perhydropolysilazane to prepare a spinning solution, which is spun by using a dry melting device to give modified perhydropolysilazane yarn. Then the yarn is calcined in vacuum or in an atmosphere of a gas such as nitrogen or argon to give the aimed silicon nitride yarn.
