PURPOSE: To secure the uniformity ratio of luminance in an abnormal state by arranging a 3rd fluorescent lamp between 1st and 2nd fluorescent lamps and lighting it through a driving circuit in the abnormal state where the 1st or the 2nd lamp is unlit. CONSTITUTION: The 3rd fluorescent lamp 7 is arranged between the 1st and the 2nd fluorescent lamps 1 and 2 for the backlight of a transmission type picture display device surrounded by a reflector 3 and a diffusing plate 4. In the case either the lamp 1 or 2 ordinarily lit is unit when abnormality occurs, either a 1st lighting circuit 5 or a 2nd lighting circuit 6 is changed over through a changeover switch 8 so as to light the lamp 7 by the circuit 5 or 6 of the unlit lamp. Thus, the uniformity ratio of luminance is secured even in the abnormal state where the lamp is unlit.
