CONSTITUTION:The level value of the inputted video signal is inspected by an inspection circuit 3, the video signal is processed by a variable gain circuit 4 based on this inspection result, the signal amplitude and offset value are changed and further, level information to show the above-mentioned processing contents is inserted into the video signal by a level information inserting circuit 5 and recorded onto a recording medium. Based on this level information, a reproducing video signal is processed by a level restoring circuit 10 and the reproducing video signal whose amplitude is similar to that of the video signal inputted to a main device is obtained. Thus, by changing adaptively the signal level of the video signal, the recording level range of the video signal is effectively used and the S/N of the video signal can be improved.
