NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I [R1 is alkyl, alkoxy, alkanoyl, alkyloxycarbonyl, etc.; R2 is alkyl, alkoxy or ω-substituted alkyl; rings A and B are expressed by formula IIWV (X is H, F, Cl, CN, CH3 or CF3), etc.; m is 0 or 1; n is 1W10; * indicates asymmetric carbon atom.].
EXAMPLE: 4'-Pentyl-4-(2'-acetoxy-propoxy)-biphenyl.
USE: Useful as a component in ferroelectric liquid crystal compositions capable of remarkably increasing values of spontaneous polarization and reducing time of response.
PREPARATION: For example, compounds expressed by formula VI and VII are used as starting raw materials to provide a 1-iodinated-2-(2- tetrahydropyranyloxy)-propane, which is then converted into a Grignard reagent and reacted with a compound expressed by formula IX to afford a compound expressed by formula X. The resultant compound expressed by formula X is subsequently deprotected and esterified to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
