Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I [R1 is alkyl, alkoxy, alkanoyl, H, halogen, CN, etc.; R2 is optically active group; rings A and B are expressed by formula IIWV (X is halogen, CN, etc.); l is 1W10; m is 0 or 1; * indicates asymmetric carbon atom.].
EXAMPLE: (2'S,2"S)-4'-Octyloxy-4-[2'-(2"-butoxypropionyloxy)propoxy]biphenyl.
USE: Useful as a component in ferroelectric liquid crystal compositions having characteristics of increasing values of spontaneous polarization.
PREPARATION: Compounds expressed by formula VI and VII are reacted in the presence of sodium hydride to provide a compound expressed by formula VIII, which is then deprotected and condensed with a compound expressed by formula IX to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
