Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable the simultaneous measurement of the thickness of slag and that of a molten metal, by a method wherein a refractory detecting rod 1 having a metal oxide film formed on the surface is inserted into a slag layer from above a trough. CONSTITUTION:A refractory detecting rod 1 having an oxide film formed on the surface is inserted through the layer of slag 2 from above until it reaches the bottom of a molten metal layer, and then it is pulled out. Then the upper end of the part of the rod 1 to which the slag 2 sticks and a reduced part of the oxide film are determined, and the thickness of the slag layer and that of the molten metal layer are measured therefrom. On the occasion, the viscosity of the slag 2 having an excellent adhesion to an oxide increases with the lowering of temperature, and thus it sticks on the surface of the rod 1. The oxide on the surface of the rod 1 is reduced by the components of a molten metal and the surface of the part of the rod 1 entering the layer of the metal shows metallic luster. Accordingly, a part between A and B is covered with the slag 2, so as to show that this part corresponds to the layer of the slag 2, while a part between C and D shows complete metallic luster so as to show that this part corresponds to the metal. As to a part between B and C, the slag 2 is peeled off for determination.
