Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily measure the magnetic permeability of a magnetic recording medium in a track direction in a non-contact state, by winding a detection coil around a ring head-shaped yoke and allowing the gap direction thereof to coincide with the track direction of the magnetic recording medium. CONSTITUTION:A detection coil 2 is wound around a ring head-shaped yoke 1 having a gap of several ten-several hundred mum and the whole is mounted on a slider 3 to constitute a detection element 4. When a ridged disc is used as a magnetic recording medium 6, the detection element 4 is arranged in close vicinity to the medium 6 so that the gap direction thereof coincides with the track direction of the medium 6. When the medium 6 is rotated, the detection element 4 is held so as to be separated from the medium 6 by a definite distance, for example, several hundred nm by the action of an air rigid film. This distance is dependent on the shape of the slider but can be controlled by changing the relative speed of the detection element 4 and the medium 6. By this method, even when the yoke 1 and the medium 6 form no perfect closed magnetic circuit, the inductance measured by the detection coil 2 is sensitive to the magnetic permeability of the medium 6. Since the medium 6 is rotated, the magnetic permeability of the medium 6 in the track direction thereof can be measured easily.
