Abstract

PURPOSE:To stabilize the surface of a protective carbon film and to improve a traveling property, lubricating effect, durability, resistance to wear, impact and corrosion, etc. by subjecting the surface of the protective carbon film formed on a magnetic layer to a surface treatment with a radical capturing agent. CONSTITUTION:A thin ferromagnetic metallic film 2, the protective carbon film 3 and a lubricating agent layer 4 are successively formed on a substrate 1 which is a nonmagnetic base. The surface of the formed protective carbon film 3 is treated by the radical capturing agent to stabilize the surface of said film when the protective carbon film 3 is formed by sputtering on the thin ferromagnetic metallic film 2. The lubricating agent layer 4 is formed on such surface. Since the lubricating agent layer 4 is formed on the protective carbon film 3 having the stabilized surface, two layers of these protective films are synergistically acted to exhibit the excellent traveling property, lubricating effect, durability, resistance to wear, impact and corrosion, etc.
