Abstract
PURPOSE:To make a discharge part quickly heatable at the time of glow discharge, letting thermionic emission come so easy, and sharply shorten the time of trasnsition to arc discharge by making resistance in the discharge part of a cathode higher than that in an electrode part, while making the resistance of the discharge part so as to become higher in proportion as going to a tip of the discharge part. CONSTITUTION:A discharge lamp electrode consists of a tube body for a discharge lamp, a cathode 2 using a semiconductor ceramic to be set up in this tube body 1 and a lead wire 4 which is connected to a sealing support part 3, sealing and supporting this cathode 2 inside the tube body 1 and at in and around an end 1a of the tube body 1 and the cathode 2, and extended to the outside via this sealing support part 3. The cathode 2 varies a composition between an electrode part 2a and a discharge part 2b in a way of performing composition control over the said semiconductor ceramic, and it is formed so as to cause resistance to become higher stepwise or gradually in proportion as going to a tip of the discharge part 2b from a base 2d of the electrode part 2a. Consequently, the discharge part 2b is quickly heated at the time of glow discharge, whereby thermionic emission comes so easy, thus the time of transition to arc discharge is sharply shortened.
