PURPOSE:To surely and quickly discriminate the type of an article by correcting the deviation of an image pickup position and performing image processing only in a detection window by a deciding means. CONSTITUTION:The video signal of the article 2 inputted from a television camera 3 at the time of signal generation of a position detecting means 6 is converted to an image signal binarized with the threshold which distinguishes holes provided on the surface of the article 2 and parts other than holes, and the deviation of the image pickup position is corrected by a positioning means 8 in accordance with the output of a image setting means 7 which sets an end face window where the end face of the article 2 is detected. The deciding means 9 performs the image processing only in the detection window to decide whether prescribed holes exist in the detection window or not. Thus, the type of the article is quickly and accurately decided 1.
