Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a chiral smectic liquid crystal composition which has a high speed of response and good contrast in display, by using as its constituents at least one member of each of five groups of specified compounds. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal composition comprises at least one member of each of five groups of compounds shown by formulas I-V [wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5 are each 4-14C alkyl or alkoxy; formula VI represents a group of formula VII, etc.; n is 0-10; m is 1-12; X is C=O or (CH)n]. A compound of formula I contributes to the speed of response, that is, it has low viscosity and is effective in giving a high speed of response. Compounds of formulas II and IV contribute to the steepness of response. A compound of formula IV is useful for ensuring the chiral smectic C phase of a liquid crystal composition. A compound of formula V centributes to the speed of response, that is, it is effective in increasing the speed of response.
