Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:2-(p-Cyanophenyl)-1,3-dioxane. USE:A liquid crystal for TN display which can driven at 1.5V. Although it is not a liquid crystal, it exists between other liquid crystal molecules to change their interactions and change the elastic properties as a liquid crystal layer, resulting in low-voltage driving. PREPARATION:1,3-Propanediol, commercially available, is allowed to react with p-cyanobenzaldehyde in benzene solvent in the presence of a sulfosalicylic acid catalyst to give the compound of the formula readily in low costs.
