Abstract
PURPOSE:To prepare an acrylic resin which is excellent in melt fluidity during molding and in solvent resistance, by copolymerizing a monomer mixture consisting chiefly of methyl methacrylate under specified conditions to form a copolymer having a specified composition. CONSTITUTION:Methyl methacrylate and alkyl arylate are copolymerized in such a manner that the monomers in an amt. corresponding to 2.5-10.0wt.% of the whole mixture are first polymerized into polymers having a wt.-average MW of at least 1,000,000 and that the polymers obtd. are then dissolved in an unchanged monomer phase so as to cause a suspension polymn., an emulsion polymn. or a bulk polymn. The adoption of such a polymn. method makes it possible to obtain a homogeneously dispersed acrylic resin consisting of at least 80wt.% copolymers contg. methyl methacrylate as a monomer unit, 2.5-10.0wt.% copolymers having a wt.-average MW of at least 1,000,000 and the balance being copolymers having a wt.-average MW less than 1,000,000, and having an intrinsic viscosity ranging 0.033-0.100l/g.
