The present invention relates to solutions of fluorocarbon polymers, and more particularly to solutions of carboxyl groups and/or fluorocarbon polymers.
Alternatively, the present invention relates to a novel solution in which a fluorocarbon polymer containing a carboxylate group is dissolved in 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone (hereinafter referred to as DMI). In general, fluorocarbon polymers have excellent resistance to solvents, and so far, few solutions containing them have been known. For example, polymers such as polytetrafluoroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene/hexafluoropropylene copolymers, and tetrafluoroethylene/perfluoro(alkyl vinyl ether) copolymers are insoluble in most solvents. On the other hand, Dutch Patent No. 152280 and Special Publication No. 1973-
No. 13333 describes that even the poorly soluble fluorocarbon polymer mentioned above becomes soluble in a specific organic solvent if it contains a highly polar sulfonic acid group in its side chain. However, to date, no solutions of fluorocarbon polymers containing carboxylic acid groups have been known. If a fluorocarbon polymer solution as described above can be obtained, it can be used, for example, as follows, and its utility value is great. Copolymers of fluorinated olefins such as tetrafluoroethylene and fluorinated monomers containing carboxylic acid groups are used as cation exchange membranes with excellent oxidation resistance, alkali resistance, and heat resistance. It is well known that it is useful as an electrolytic diaphragm when producing chlorine. Therefore, if a solution of such a fluorocarbon polymer could be obtained, the means and operations for forming a film would be extremely easy, and it would be possible to manufacture membranes with complex shapes and extremely thin thickness, and it would also be possible to manufacture membranes by impregnation. Furthermore, it becomes possible to repair pinholes and cracks in diaphragms and to coat the surface of arbitrary objects with fluorocarbon polymers. Furthermore, the solution can also be used as an adhesive when bonding fluorocarbon polymers together to form a membrane with a complicated shape. As described above, the advantages of this solution are significant. JP-A-55-149336 describes a solution of a fluorine-containing polymer containing a carboxylic acid ester group, but in this invention, in order to increase the solubility of the fluorine-containing polymer in a solvent, It is necessary to convert the functional groups in the polymer into specific carboxylic acid esters,
In addition, when using the solution for the above-mentioned purposes,
It is also necessary to hydrolyze the ester groups in the fluorine-containing polymer after use. The present inventors have discovered that carboxyl groups and/or
After searching for a solvent that can easily dissolve fluorocarbon polymers containing carboxylate groups and conducting various studies, we discovered that DMI has excellent ability.
This led to the present invention. Acid amides such as dimethylformamide and methylacetamide, which are the same aprotic polar solvents as DMI, or dimethyl sulfoxide can be used for the carboxyl group and/or dimethyl sulfoxide used in the present invention under the same conditions.
Alternatively, the effect of DMI is clear from the fact that it swells the fluorocarbon polymer containing carboxylate groups, but does not reach the point of dissolving it. That is, the present invention provides carboxyl groups and/or
Alternatively, the present invention provides a solution of a fluorocarbon polymer containing a carboxyl group and/or a carboxylate group, which is obtained by dissolving a fluorocarbon polymer containing a carboxylate group in DMI. A carboxyl group that is made into a solution in the present invention, and/or
Alternatively, the carboxylate group-containing fluorocarbon polymer is the following polymer. That is, a combination of a fluorinated monomer (i) having a carboxyl group, a carboxylate group, or a functional group convertible to these groups and a fluorinated ethylene monomer (ii). If the polymer has a functional group that can be converted to a carboxyl group or a carboxylate group, all the functional groups that can be converted to a carboxyl group and/or a carboxylate group are converted to a carboxyl group and/or a carboxylate group by a polymer reaction. It is a polymer converted into Examples of the fluorine-containing monomer (i) include the following. CF 2 = CFO (CF 2 ) 2 to 3 COOCH 3 CF 2 = CFO (CF 2 ) 2 to 5 COF CF 2 = CFO (CF 2 ) 2 to 5 COOC 2 H 5 CF 2 = CFOCF 2 CF (CF 3 ) O(CF 2 ) 2 ~ 3 COOCH 3 CF 2 = CFOCF 2 CF (CF 3 ) O(CF 2 ) 2 ~ 3 COF Also, as the fluorinated ethylene monomer (ii), ethylene tetrafluoride , trifluorochloroethylene,
Examples include propylene hexafluoride, ethylene trifluoride, and vinylidene fluoride, with ethylene tetrafluoride being particularly preferred. In addition, each of the monomers (i) and (ii) is
You can also use more than one species. Furthermore, in addition to monomers (i) and (ii), fluorinated alkyl vinyl ether (iii) and sulfonyl group-containing vinyl monomer (iv) may be added as copolymerization components. These monomers (iii) and (iv) can be used in combination, or two or more of each can be used. Examples of the fluorinated alkyl vinyl ether (iii) include perfluoromethyl vinyl ether, perfluoroethyl vinyl ether, and perfluoropropyl vinyl ether. Further, as the sulfonyl group-containing vinyl monomer (iv), the following can be exemplified. After copolymerization, the sulfonyl groups contained in these monomers are converted into sulfonic acid-
Converts to SO 3 H type, sulfonamide-SO 2 NR 2 (R is H, alkyl group, or aryl group) type, various organic or inorganic sulfonate types, or sulfonylhalite-SO 2 X (X is a halogen atom) The polymer thus obtained can also be used as a fluorocarbon polymer to be made into a solution in the present invention. Furthermore, for example, by chemically treating a fluorocarbon polymer containing sulfonic acid-type functional groups, some or all of the sulfonic acid-type functional groups in the polymer can be converted to carboxyl groups and/or
Polymers obtained by chemical treatment, such as fluorocarbon polymers converted to carboxylate groups, can also be used as the fluorocarbon polymer to be made into a solution in the present invention. The carboxylate groups contained in the fluorocarbon polymer used as a solution in the present invention include various inorganic and organic carboxylate groups. Examples of inorganic carboxylate groups include carboxylates of ammonium ions and alkali metal and alkaline earth metal carboxylate groups such as Na.K.Cs.Ca.Sr.Ba and Zn. Also, examples of organic carboxylates include N+H

[Formula] Examples include carboxylate groups of quaternary ammonium such as N+(C 4 H 9 ) 4 and N+H 3 CH 2 CH 2 OH. The carboxyl group- or carboxylate group-containing fluorocarbon polymer obtained as described above preferably contains 1 mol % or more of vinyl monomer units containing carboxyl groups or carboxylate groups. If the monomer unit content is 1 mol % or less, the solubility of the fluorocarbon polymer in DMI decreases, making it impossible to obtain a solution with a practical concentration. The fluorocarbon polymer solution of the present invention may be used at various concentrations depending on the various uses described above. A fluorocarbon polymer containing a carboxyl group and/or a carboxylate group is dissolved in DMI by adding a certain amount of the polymer to a certain amount of DMI, and heating and stirring as necessary. Temperature during melting is over 100℃
It is preferable to carry out the reaction at a temperature below the boiling point of DMI from the viewpoint of solubility of the polymer. Further, a mixed solvent obtained by mixing DMI with an arbitrary amount of hexamethyltriamide phosphate can also be used as a solvent in the present invention. Further, the shape of the polymer may be any shape such as a lump, a film, a fiber, a rod, a pellet, etc., but granules or powder are preferable from the viewpoint of ease of solubility. The DMI solution of the carboxyl group- and/or carboxylate group-containing fluorocarbon polymer obtained as described above can be used for various purposes, but its utility value is particularly limited for cation exchange membranes for halogenated alkali electrolysis. big. In other words, it is possible to create thin films of cation exchange membranes or films with complex shapes by casting from the solution, to repair pinholes or cracks that occur on the cation exchange membrane, or to cast the solution between membranes. When used as an adhesive, the membrane can be formed into cylinders, bags, or even more complex shapes. Furthermore, the surface of the electrode can be easily coated with a fluorocarbon polymer. The present invention will be explained in detail below using Examples, Reference Examples, and Comparative Examples. Example 1 Tetrafluoroethylene and A fluorocarbon polymer powder having an equivalent weight of 1000 and consisting of a copolymer of
After time hydrolysis, the carboxylic acid ester group was converted into carboxylic acid sodium salt form -COONa. 5g of the resin obtained in this way was combined with 95g of DMI.
In addition, the resin was heated to 200°C and stirred to completely dissolve the resin to obtain a 5% by weight solution. Example 2 The carboxylic acid sodium salt type fluorocarbon polymer obtained in Example 1 was heated in 2N hydrochloric acid overnight, and then sufficiently washed with warm water to completely convert it into the carboxylic acid type -COOH. Example 1 5 g of the resin thus obtained was
It was dissolved in DMI in the same manner as above to obtain a 5% by weight solution. Example 3 10 g of the carboxylic acid sodium salt type fluorocarbon polymer obtained in Example 1 was added to 90 g of DMI,
Heat to 180℃ and stir to completely dissolve the resin.
A 10% by weight solution was obtained. Comparative Example 1 5 g of the carboxylic acid type -COOH fluorocarbon polymer obtained in Example 2 was dissolved in methylacetamide.
95g and heated to 200°C. Stirring was continued at this temperature for 3 hours, but the polymer particles were only swollen and present in the solvent, but were not dissolved. Comparative Example 2 The same procedure as Comparative Example 1 was conducted except that dimethyl sulfoxide was used instead of methylacetamide. Even after stirring for 3 hours, the polymer particles merely swelled and existed in the solvent, but were not dissolved. Example 4 Tetrafluoroethylene/perfluoro(3.6-dioxa-4-methyl-7-octensulfonic acid) copolymer powder [Nafion 511 manufactured by DuPont] having an equivalent weight of 1100 was prepared in a phosphorus pentachloride/phosphorus oxychloride system. sulfonyl chloride, followed by reduction with hydroiodic acid, and further treatment with a 1:1 (volume ratio) mixture of 10% NaOH aqueous solution and methanol,
The sulfonyl chloride group moiety was converted to carboxylic acid sodium salt type. Example 1 5 g of the resin thus obtained was
It was dissolved in DMI in the same manner as above to obtain a 5% by weight solution. Reference Example 1 DMI solution of the fluorocarbon polymer having sodium carboxylate groups obtained in Example 1 (5

0.5 ml was spread evenly. Next, sandwich the two sheets in a heat press machine,
Pressing was carried out at a temperature of 180° C. and a pressure of 1.5 kg/cm 2 for 30 minutes. After cooling, a peel test was conducted to examine the degree of adhesion between the two sheets (room temperature, peel speed 2 cm/min). The peel strength was 2.5 kg/inch. On the other hand, two hot-pressed sheets made in the same manner as above, except that no DMI solution was used, were not bonded together at all. -Dioxa-4-methyl-7-octensulfonic acid) copolymer membrane (film thickness 10 mils, equivalent weight 1100) was chemically treated to convert the sulfonic acid on one side of the membrane to carboxylic acid, and the exchange group was converted into carboxylic acid. We created a two-layer membrane with different thickness on both sides (carboxylic acid layer thickness: 2 mils,
Also, all exchange groups are sodium salt type). A 5 mm long cut was made on the carboxylic acid layer side of the membrane with a razor until it reached the sulfonic acid layer. Then, the membrane was used as a diaphragm to separate the anode chamber and the cathode chamber (the carboxylic acid layer side was attached facing the cathode chamber side) to form a battery case with an effective area of 30 x 30 cm2 , and the anode chamber was filled with saturated sodium chloride. Water was supplied to the cathode chamber so that the outlet concentration was 35% by weight, and the current density was 30A/dm 2 . 80

It became. When the film was taken out and observed, it was found that the sulfonic acid layer and the carboxylic acid layer had peeled off centering around the cuts made by the razor. On the other hand, before using the membrane with cuts made in the same manner as above, dry the membrane sufficiently, sprinkle the DMI solution obtained in Example 1 on the cuts, and then apply DMI in a hot air dryer. The cut was repaired by evaporation and the membrane was used as a diaphragm for salt electrolysis in the same manner as above. The current efficiency is 96% at the initial stage, and further increases by 1
This value was maintained even after several months had passed.
Moreover, no abnormality was observed in the membrane taken out.
