Abstract
PURPOSE:To control the thickness of a catalyst layer carried by a carrier, by bringing spherical silica into contact with a silane compound with amino group, fixing thereafter a specific quantity of ions of noble metal on the surface of the silica, and effecting reduction treatment thereon to form a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:After spherical silica is reacted with a silane compound with amino group to be modified, said silica is brought into contact with an aqueous solution of salts of noble metal having quantity of one fourth mole or less of the quantity of the amino group of the modified silica, causing the ions of noble metal to be fixed on the surface of the silica; following which reduction treatment is applied thereto to produce a catalyst having a surface layer of noble metal carried by the silica carrier. As a silane compound with amino group, 3-aminopropyltrialkoxysilane, N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrialkoxysila ne are preferable. Quantity of amino group of 0.1-2.0mmol. per modified silica of 1g is preferable.
