Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the delay time, inserted for preventing upper and lower arm short-circuit, to a minimum required limit by delaying the release of a gate signal from its inhibition only for the time in which the other power converter element in the same phase does not recover current blocking ability. CONSTITUTION:An upper and lower arm short-circuit preventing circuit 5 has a comparator 8 serving as the polarity discriminating means of a current instruction value in each phase discriminating the polarity of a current preset value. While in order to inhibit either one of the control signals applied to two power converter elements connected to each phase in accordance with the polarity of its current instruction value, the output of the comparator 8 and an output, inverted in a NOT gate circuit 7a, are introduced respectively to AND gate circuits 9a, 9b. Upon detecting that the power converter element has noT recovered current blocking ability in off-delay circuits 10a, 10b, outputs of these circuits are applied to NOT gates 7c, 7d, and the power converter element in the reverse polarity side is inhibited in its gate by these NOT gates 7c, 7d and AND gate circuits 9c, 9d.
