Abstract

CONSTITUTION: A bit converting circuit 36a as the converting means is provided in a compressing/expanding means as the compressing/expanding means. The circuit 36a performs the bit conversion processing in accordance with the classification of an optical disk 19 and the classification of a connected device to store and reproduce picture information. Thus, register and retrieval are possible even if specifications of the optical disk are different. Further, the compatibility with conventional device type and medium is kept. Not only the optical disk but also an optical memory card, a laser card, or the like may be used as the recording medium.
