Description
It is known that polyvinyl alcohol and its copolymers have low gas permeability. However, the use of these materials for packaging in their natural form limits their use in humid atmospheres due to the presence of many hydroxyl groups in these polymers. In addition, the permeabilities of oxygen, carbon dioxide and other fixed gases are very low, and increase exponentially as a function of relative humidity. The polyolefin copolymers are less sensitive to moisture. Commercial packaging materials and other protective materials must have low gas and moisture permeability. To overcome this drawback, a solution has recently been proposed in US Pat. No. 4,003,963 by the use of certain mixtures of polyvinyl chloride and polyvinyl alcohol copolymers. The vinyl chloride polymer not containing carboxyl groups is mixed with about 10 to 30% by weight, based on the weight of this polymer, of a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl alcohol containing more than about 61% or 50 moles% of vinyl alcohol as a comonomer.
Another patent approach to the problem is found in United States Patent No. 3,585,177. This patent discloses the preparation of a copolymer of lower alpha-olefin and vinyl alcohol having a residual ester content of less than 3% and an olefin content of between 5 and 40% by weight. Differential thermal analysis was used to demonstrate that the copolymers have a single narrow endothermic domain with a melting range of less than 30 ° C. Other associations in the field of barrier compositions are mixtures of inexpensive materials with materials endowed with good barrier properties. These possibilities are limited by the incompatibilities of such mixtures.
The invention relates to polymeric blends of a polyester (ester) and a vinyl alcohol polymer, or their copolymers, as barrier barrier packaging compositions. The invention relates in particular to compositions endowed with very good resistance to the permeability of gases and to the transmission of water vapor.
The invention is based in part on the discovery of barrier compositions comprising a blend of a polyester homopolymer or copolymer and a polymer of vinyl alcohol or an ethylene / vinyl alcohol copolymer. It has been found that a blend of a polyester and at least about 10% by weight of a vinyl alcohol polymer or an ethylene / vinyl alcohol copolymer containing more than about 61% by weight or 50 moles% vinyl alcohol, constituted a packaging material with a barrier effect whose gas permeability and water vapor transmission are optimized.
Polyester materials, especially those which are characterized by a combination of diols with terephthalic acid, for example a polymer of ethylene terephthalate, are usually moderate in terms of their oxygen and oxygen permeability. humidity. Other copolyesters based on terephthalic and isophthalic acids and diols or mixtures thereof are also moderate to low with respect to their gas barrier properties. These particular materials can be formed from the free acid and a particular glycol, especially ethylene glycol or butylene glycol, or they can be formed by condensation of phthalic acid esters with glycols, which gives a thermoplastic material carrying terminal carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. Examples of these polymers are poly (ethylene terephthalate), poly (butylene terephthalate), poly (ethylene terephthalate / isophthalate) and poly (ethylene glycol / cyclohexane-dimethanol / terephthalate) . Copolymers with other phthalic acids also fall within the scope of the invention. A particularly preferred polyester has alternating units of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol. This polyester is well known in the textile fiber, plastic film and bottle industry and ordinarily has an intrinsic viscosity in the range of 0.55 to 2 dl. The polyesters of the invention can result from the copolymerization of terephthalic / isophthalic or phthalic acid or of an ester with a glycol such as ethylene - glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, cyclohexane - dimethanol, neopentyl glycol, pentane diol, etc. Other aromatic acids can be used in place of phthalic acids, for example benzo-phenone-dicarboxylic acid, cyclopentane-dicarboxylic acid, * diphenylsulfone-dicarboxylic acid, diphenylmethane-dicarboxylic acid , propylene-bis- (phenyl-carboxylic acid), dicarboxylic acid derived from diphenyl oxide and other aromatic diacids. Other polyesters include poly (tetra-methylene terephthalate), poly (cyclohexane-dimethanol terephthalate), polyethylene dibenzoate, copolyesters of terephthalic acid, an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and a glycol, etc. The resins can also be derived from other dicarboxylic acids such as oxalic acid, malonic acid, succinic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid, pimelic acid, suberic acid, l azelaic acid, sebacic acid, brassylic acid, thapsic acid, diethylsuccinic acid, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid and hemi-mellitic acid. Therefore, the term "polyester11" used in this specification also covers condensation products of the mentioned acids and polyols.
Polyvinyl alcohol, which will also be referred to more simply as "PVA" in this specification, is usually produced by hydrolysis of a vinyl acetate polymer and can be obtained commercially, to varying degrees hydrolysis. The resulting polymers are copolymers of vinyl alcohol and vinyl acetate having vinyl alcohol contents of more than 80% by weight. The copolymers of ethylene and vinyl alcohol, also referred to simply as "EVAL" herein, can be purchased or converted by hydrolysis to suitable ethylene / vinyl alcohol copolymers. The 4 polymers described in the present invention are ethylene / vinyl alcohol copolymers or homopolymers of hydrolyzed vinyl alcohol containing up to 10% by weight of residual vinyl acetate. Vinyl alcohol copolymers containing more than 50% vinyl alcohol as a monomer can be converted into films with remarkable resistance to the passage of gases. Normally they are unsatisfactory due to their poor sensitivity to humidity. According to the invention, the lack of sensitivity to water vapor is remedied by mixing the vinyl alcohol polymer or completely hydrolyzed ethylene / vinyl alcohol copolymers with a polyester such as poly (terephthalate). ethylene), various copolymers and other polymers of terephthalates.
Another advantageous feature of the invention is the use of a system of three components, namely polyester, polymer or copolymer of vinyl alcohol and plasticizer. The addition of a plasticizer usually tends to increase the oxygen permeability of other polymer blends. However, in the mixtures of the invention, this oxygen permeability manifests to a lesser degree than one would expect. Other polymer systems usually begin to lose their resistance to the passage of oxygen when levels of plasticizer of 5-10% are incorporated. On the other hand, mixtures of polyester and of copolymer of ethylene and of vinyl alcohol undergo a noticeable drop in oxygen permeability only by the addition of 20% of plasticizer. Similar behavior has been observed in blends of polyester with a vinyl alcohol polymer and a plasticizer. In these cases, the plasticizers are normally butyl benzyl phthalate, aromatic phosphates and other types of plasticizers, the use of which with vinyl chloride polymers and polar polymers is well known in the industry. Most of these plasticizers are esters of phthalic acid.

In another remarkable aspect, mixtures of the invention can be made into films which are transparent. This is very advantageous for many applications in the packaging of food products by means of film or bottles. If the polyester resins are replaced by other thermoplastic resins such as polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene and copolymers of styrene and acrylonitrile, the mixtures exhibit serious incompatibilities, are opaque and separate in phases, which is manifested by a tendency to delamination and by very poor barrier characteristics.
It has also been found that the co-extrusion of mixed materials, in the form of an internal barrier layer, produces a composition having a very high resistance to the transmission of water vapor and a very low oxygen permeability, making it an excellent packaging material. For example, the co-extrusion of three layers comprising an outer polyolefin layer, an intermediate layer containing a blend of a polyester and a vinyl alcohol polymer or a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl alcohol and a second outer layer of polyolefin, form a composite with extremely low transmission of water vapor and oxygen. Permeability measurements of these composites show that the thickness of the intermediate layer is decisive if we want to give very good barrier properties to the co-extrusion product formed from the three layers.
More generally, compositions of a polyester and PVA or their copolymers have been found to be excellent barrier materials. It would have been expected that such associations would constitute incompatible or poor barriers based on the inter-reaction of hydroxyl groups and / or carboxyl groups of these mixtures. However, nothing like this has been found. On the contrary, excellent stopping properties have been obtained. Furthermore, it was by no means expected that compositions containing more than 10% by weight of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer or vinyl alcohol homopolymer could produce significant reductions in permeability to oxygen, manifested very remarkably by a clear drop in permeability from about 40 to 50% by weight of a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl alcohol with PETG, copolymer of the polyester type of terephthalic acid , ethylene glycol and cyclohexane- = dimethanol ("PETG"). It has also been found that the proportions of polyester and vinyl alcohol homopolymers and copolymers in these compositions are critical if the correct balance between low oxygen permeation and low transmission is to be achieved water vapor. These mixtures also have advantageous mechanical properties, which makes them advantageous to use in the production of films, bottles, sheet materials and other packaging applications. Although component ratios have been found to be critical for certain mixtures, it should be noted in the broadest context of the teaching of the present invention that mixtures of polymers, in general, should not be used. not be limited to special reports.
Other characteristics and advantages of the present invention will emerge from the detailed description which follows, given with reference to the appended drawings in which: FIG. 1 is a graphic representation of the gas permeability of a composition based on "EVAL "and" PETG "of the invention (curve A) compared to a composition of the aforementioned US Pat. La transmission de vapeur d'eau est égale à 7,75 g (ml)/m2/24 h à 23,9°C sous une humidité relative de 50 %.40 parts by weight of an ethylene / vinyl alcohol copolymer containing 18% ethylene and 82% vinyl alcohol by weight are mixed in a "Brabender" v 5 extruder with 60 parts by weight of a polyester type copolymer produced from terephthalic acid, ethylene glycol and cyclohexane-dimethanol (product "PETG" from the company Eastman Chemical). The resin mixture is then made into a film by compression molding in a heated press. The oxygen permeability is found to be 105.4 cm (ml) / m / 24 h at atmospheric pressure at 23.9 ° C, under a relative humidity of 0%. The water vapor transmission is equal to 7.75 g (ml) / m2 / 24 h at 23.9 ° C under a relative humidity of 50%.
A complete series of ethylene / vinyl alcohol copolymers (EVAL) with PETG containing varying amounts by weight of EVAL have the oxygen permeability and water vapor transmission shown in the graph in Figure 1. The Poor permeability of the polyester is unexpectedly improved when the EVAL copolymer is added, with an accentuated drop in the range of about 40 to 50% of EVAL. The curve corresponding to a non-oriented PVC / ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer, taken from the data in table I of the aforementioned patent of the United States of America No. 4,003,963, shows a behavior completely different from that of the product of l 'invention.

La 8 transmission de la vapeur d'eau est égale à 20,15 g (ml)/m3/24 h à 23,9°C pour une humidité relative de 50 %.25 parts by weight of an ethylene / vinyl alcohol copolymer containing 18% by weight of ethylene and 82% by weight of vinyl alcohol are mixed in a "Brabender" extruder with 75 parts by weight of a polyester-type copolymer prepared from terephthalic acid, ethylene glycol and cyclohexane-dimethanol (product "PETG" from the company Eastman Chemical). The resin mixture is made into a film by compression molding in a heated press. The oxygen permeability is equal to 217 cm (ml) / m / 24 h at atmospheric pressure at 23.9 ° C. The 8 transmission of water vapor is equal to 20.15 g (ml) / m3 / 24 h at 23.9 ° C for a relative humidity of 50%.
Another sample is prepared in which the copolymer of ethylene and vinyl alcohol is replaced by fully hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). When this sample has been made into a film by compression, it has the oxygen permeability and water vapor transmission values indicated in Table I. The addition of PVA further reduces the • 10 permeability to oxygen and slightly increases the transmission of water vapor, which shows that PVA and EVAL are just as effective at stopping a gas without noticeable alteration in the transmission of water vapor.

On réalise des films co-extrudés en utilisant la configuration à trois couches ci-après : (a) couche externe - copolymère éthylène/acétate 25 de vinyle, contenant 2 % en poids d'acétate de vinyle (EVA, 2 % de VA)Coextruded films are produced using the following three-layer configuration: (a) outer layer - ethylene / vinyl acetate copolymer, containing 2% by weight of vinyl acetate (EVA, 2% of VA)
(b) couche intermédiaire - mélange de 50 parties en poids de chacun des polymères PETG et EVAL(b) intermediate layer - mixture of 50 parts by weight of each of the PETG and EVAL polymers
(c) couche externe - la même que (a).(c) outer layer - the same as (a).
Table IVa indicates the effect of the 50/50 mixture of PETG / EVAL and the variation of its thickness on the oxygen permeability and the water vapor transmission of these films. The results obtained demonstrate that the increase in thickness expressed as a percentage of the total thickness reduces the oxygen permeability, but does not significantly modify the transmission of water vapor.

The results indicated in table ivb, obtained for a similar film formed from three layers, using as an intermediate layer an EVAL product with 18% ethylene and 82% vinyl alcohol, show the same tendency as that of the mixture. polyester / EVAL. The results concerning the oxygen transmission, for the film with three layers with central layer in EVAL, are only slightly lower than the results which one obtains for the mixture * EVAL-polyester at 50/50.

As shown in Table IV (parts (a) and (b)), the co-extrusion of the mixed materials into an internal barrier layer gives a composition endowed with an extremely high resistance to the transmission of vapor 25 d water and very low oxygen permeability, making it an excellent packaging material. For example, the co-extrusion of the three layers comprising an outer polyolefin layer, an intermediate layer containing a mixture of polyester and polyvinyl alcohol or an ethylene / vinyl alcohol copolymer, and a second outer polyolefin layer, forms a composite with extremely low water vapor and oxygen transmission. The permeabilities of these composites are indicated in Table IV as a function of the thickness of the barrier layer, the results demonstrating that the thickness of the central layer plays a decisive role in giving the co-extrudate of three layers of very good stopping properties.
