pour Méthode de traitement d'huiles contenant des biphényls chlorés.for Method of treatment of oils containing chlorinated biphenyls.
Inventeur : Monsieur Ph. Nélis.Inventor: Mister Ph.
It relates more specifically to a method for evaluating the PCB content of oils, by assaying chlorine from the chemical destruction of PCBs.
The commercial products are sold under a name which is generally followed by a number (eg 1254), the last two figures of which indicate the chlorine content of the PCBs (54% in this case). In some cases, the oils contain mixtures of PCBs; the chlorine content of these mixtures is most often between 40% and 60%.
Since PCBs have been classified as pollutants, criteria have been established to classify fluids according to their PCB content. For example, according to the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States of America, fluids containing less than 50 ppm (parts per million) of PCBs are considered to be free of PCBs, those with a content of 50 to 500 ppm are considered contaminated, while those above 500 ppm are classified as PCB.
D'autres méthodes, plus simples, permettent seulement d'estimer si l'huile examinée contient, soit moins de 50 ppm de PCB, soit entre 50 et 500 ppm ou plus de 500 ppm de PCB.Several analytical methods used up to now to determine the PCB content of oils use expensive equipment (infrared analysis by Fourier transforms, by X-rays, by electron capture chromatography, by mass spectroscopy or by coulometry) which is only available in specialized laboratories with qualified personnel. Other, simpler methods only make it possible to estimate whether the oil examined contains either less than 50 ppm of PCB, or between 50 and 500 ppm or more than 500 ppm of PCB.
However, the regulations currently applied in a country can be modified. In addition, they vary from country to country. On the other hand, industrialists treating contaminated oils to reduce their PCB content as well as users purchasing regenerated oils want to know the PCB content more precisely, quickly and without having to call in specialized laboratories.
We therefore see that it is necessary to be able to dispose of an inexpensive method, easily applicable on the site and making it possible, in a relatively short time, to "know the real PCB content of an oil. , either contaminated or regenerated.
The method of the present invention achieves this objective. It is based on the chemical destruction of the PCBs contained in the oil leading to the formation of chlorine ions, which are extracted and dosed by mercurimetry.
To this end, the method of the present invention for determining the PCB content of an oil essentially consists in: - bringing the oil into contact with an excess of alkali metal which reacts with the PCBs contained in the oil in forming alkali metal chloride, - remove excess alkali metal by stirring in the presence of an acidified aqueous solution, free of chlorine ions, - allow the aqueous phase containing the chlorine ions to settle and take off, - titrate these chlorine ions by mercurimetry, from which the chlorine content of the starting oil is obtained, - calculate the PCB content of this oil, from this chlorine content of the oil and the estimated chlorine content of PCBs contained in this oil.
Plus particulièrement, la méthode de la présente invention consiste essentiellement à : - diluer l'huile par un hydrocarbure paraffinique ou naphténique, liquide, - ajouter une solution d'hydrocarbure aromatique polycyclique dans un solvant polaire inerte vis-à-vis des métaux alcalins, - ajouter une dispersion de métal alcalin dans un hydrocarbure paraffinique ou naphténique et agiter, la , quantité de métal alcalin étant supérieure à la quan- - 4 - tité stoechiométriquement nécessaire pour réagir avec les atomes de chlore des PCB, - éliminer l'excès de métal alcalin par agitation en présence d'une solution aqueuse acidifiée, exempte d'ions de chlore, - laisser décanter et prélever la phase aqueuse contenant les ions de chlore, - titrer ces ions de chlore dans la phase aqueuse ayant un pH compris entre 1 et 4 par une solution aqueuse de nitrate mercurique en présence d'un indicateur coloré, - calculer la teneur en chlore de l'huile à analyser d'après la formuleMore particularly, the method of the present invention essentially consists in: - diluting the oil with a liquid paraffinic or naphthenic hydrocarbon, - adding a solution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in a polar solvent inert with respect to alkali metals, - add an alkali metal dispersion in a paraffinic or naphthenic hydrocarbon and stir, the quantity of alkali metal being greater than the quantity stoichiometrically necessary to react with the chlorine atoms of the PCBs, - eliminate the excess of alkali metal by stirring in the presence of an acidified aqueous solution, free of chlorine ions, - allow the aqueous phase containing the chlorine ions to settle and take off, - titrate these chlorine ions in the aqueous phase having a pH of between 1 and 4 with an aqueous solution of mercuric nitrate in the presence of a colored indicator, - calculate the chlorine content of the oil to be analyzed according to the formula
ppm Cl = A x M x 71000 Cppm Cl = A x M x 71000 C
où A = volume en millilitres de solution de nitrate mercurique utilisé; M = molarité de la solution aqueuse de nitrate mercurique; C = poids de l'échantillon en grammes, - multiplier cette teneur en'chlore par 100, où T est lawhere A = volume in milliliters of mercuric nitrate solution used; M = molarity of the aqueous solution of mercuric nitrate; C = sample weight in grams, - multiply this chlorine content by 100, where T is the

teneur estimée en chlore des biphényles chlorés contenus dans l'huile de départ.estimated chlorine content of the chlorinated biphenyls contained in the starting oil.
The method of the present invention therefore consists, in a first step, in chemically degrading the PCBs contained in the oil to be examined. This degradation must be able to be carried out completely and in a relatively short period of time. To this end, A. Oku (Chemistry and Industry, 1978, p. 841) has already described a process for dechlorination of PCBs in solution in tetrahydrofuran, treating with sodium naphthalenide, under a nitrogen atmosphere, at 0 ° C. , for 10 minutes. Analysis of the treated product showed that it was practically free of chlorine.
On peut notamment utiliser un alcane contenant de 5 à 16 atomes de carbone ou « un cycloalcane, tel le eyclohexaneAccording to the present invention, the oil - (containing PCBs) is diluted with a paraffinic or naphthenic hydrocarbon, which is liquid at room temperature. An alkane containing 5 to 16 carbon atoms or " a cycloalkane, such as eyclohexane
To the mixture of oil and hydrocarbon diluent, a solution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon is then added in a polar solvent inert towards alkali metals. Examples of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons include naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene and biphenyl. This hydrocarbon is used in the form of a solution in a solvent inert towards alkali metals. This solvent is advantageously an ether, including in particular 2-methoxyethylether, dimethyl ether, diethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane or the like.
The PCB dechlorination reagent, namely an alkali metal, is then added. This alkali metal is preferably used in the form of a dispersion in a paraffinic or naphthenic hydrocarbon, liquid at room temperature, in order to improve the contact between the reagents and to accelerate the reaction. As alkali metal, sodium, potassium or lithium can be used, the choice of this metal depending on its activity from the point of view of dechlorination and on its price. Potassium and sodium are particularly active and are used in dispersion in an anhydrous paraffinic hydrocarbon. The amount of alkali metal used is greater than the stoichiometric amount necessary for the dechlorination of the PCBs contained in the starting oil. An excess of alkali metal is therefore always used. In an embodiment of the invention according to which sodium is used as the alkali metal, it is ensured that the reaction mixture contains an excess of sodium when this mixture remains gray.
The alkali metal destroys the carbon-chlorine bonds of the PCBs, forming a chloride of this metal. The aromatic hy-1 hydrocarbon contained in the reaction mixture - 6 - acts as an electron transfer agent between this alkali metal and the PCBs. The reaction complex, stabilized and activated by the presence of a polar solvent, leads to rapid dechlorination.
When the dechlorination reaction of the PCBs is complete, the excess alkali metal is removed using an acidic aqueous solution which also makes it possible to extract the chlorine ions. This reaction to remove excess alkali metal is preferably carried out with stirring. When the mixture becomes clear and yellow-orange in color, it is subjected to decantation.
The aqueous phase, containing the alkali metal chloride, is drawn off in order to titrate the chlorine ions by mercurimetry. For this purpose, this aqueous phase must have a pH of between 1 and 4. Then subjected to ti-r trage with a solution of mercuric nitrate, in the presence of a known indicator, which can in particular be diphenyl-carbazone, optionally mixed with l-nitriso-2-naphthol and / or blue bromophenol.
Cette teneur est donnée par la formule ppm de Cl = A x M x 71000This titration operation makes it possible to determine the chlorine content of the starting oil containing PCBs. This content is given by the formula ppm of Cl = A x M x 71000
CVS
où A = volume en millilitres de solution de nitrate mercurique utilisé; M = molarité de la solution aqueuse de nitrate mercuri que; C = poids, en grammes, de l'échantillon d'huile de départ .where A = volume in milliliters of mercuric nitrate solution used; M = molarity of the aqueous mercury nitrate solution; C = weight, in grams, of the starting oil sample.
La teneur en chlore de l'huile examinée est ensuite reliée à la teneur en PCB de cette huile en multipliant cette teneur en chlore de l'huile par 100, T représentantThe chlorine content of the oil examined is then linked to the PCB content of this oil by multiplying this chlorine content of the oil by 100, T representing
TT
, le pourcentage estimé en chlore des PCB et étant compris - 7 - entre 40 et 60., the estimated percentage of chlorine in PCBs being between 7 and 40.
When the oil contains only one commercial PCB of which the chlorine content is known, for example PCB with 54% chlorine, the method of the present invention makes it possible to precisely determine the PCB content of this oil, T being equal to 54. But the oil examined may contain mixtures of various commercial PCBs. In this case, the value T is most often between 40 and 60. An arbitrary value of T equal to 50 is generally considered sufficient. For maximum security, it is however possible to adopt a value of T equal to 40; there will thus be, for the PCB content of the oil examined, a value equal to or greater than the actual value.
The following example is given by way of illustration and is in no way limiting.
ExempleExample
The following solutions are prepared: 1) Catalytic solution: 5 grams of naphthalene dissolved and brought to 100 ml in 2-methyloxyethyl ether; 2) Solution of mercuric nitrate (titration agent): 0.01 mol of mercuric nitrate is dissolved in deionized water acidified with 1 mol of nitric acid, then deionized water is added to the volume of 1 liter; 3) indicator I: solution (100 milliliters) of 0.5 g of diphenylcarbazone in 95% ethanol 4) indicator II: solution (100 milliliters) of 1 g of l-nitriso-2-naphthol in ethanol at 95th.
Ces solutions étant préparées, on procède comme suit :These solutions being prepared, we proceed as follows:
About 10 g of oil to be examined, containing PCBs, are placed in an Erlenmeyer flask and diluted with 10 ml of hexane. 2 ml of catalytic solution are added and the mixture is stirred for approximately 30 seconds. 0.5 g of sodium is then introduced in dispersion and the mixture is stirred for 15 minutes. The solution must remain gray, this yes ensures an excess of reagent. Otherwise, sodium is added further and the reaction time is extended.
When the dechlorination reaction of the PCBs is complete, the excess sodium is destroyed by adding 25 ml of acidified aqueous solution, free of chlorine ions, namely an aqueous solution of alkali salt, in particular of phosphate or alkali sulfate, and inorganic acid free of chlorine and inert towards the treated oil, such as for example nitric acid or phosphoric acid. When the solution becomes yellow-orange and clear, it is poured into a separating ball, the mixture is vigorously stirred for 1 minute, then left to stand to allow the phases to separate.
The aqueous phase is collected and its pH is checked, which must be between 1 and 4. If this pH is greater than 4, it is acidified with nitric or phosphoric acid.
This aqueous phase contains sodium chloride, resulting from the reaction of dechlorination of PCBs by sodium. The chlorine ions are titrated using the mercuric nitrate solution, in the presence of 0.5 ml of indicator I and 0.25 ml of indicator II. The Cl ”ions are complexed by the Hg ++ ion in the form of a non-dissociated molecule HgC ^. Beyond the equivalence point, excess Hg ++ ions are detected by the indicators; the color of the solution changes from yellow to mauve-cherry.
The method described above was applied to several oil samples, each sample being obtained by adding a determined quantity of PCB (57.9% - 9 - chlorine) to the oil free of chlorine derivatives. With the method of the present invention, it is therefore possible to determine the PCB content of an oil, without having to use expensive equipment and specialized personnel. It is more advantageous than other methods which only make it possible to estimate whether the oil contains either less than 50 ppm of PCB, or between 50 and 500 ppm of oil, or more than 500 ppm of PCB, and which will have to be modified if the classification criteria for oils containing PCBs are subject to revision.
The method of the invention can be used anywhere where it is desired to control the content of a PCB oil. It is sufficient that the operator has a small box containing Erlenmeyer flasks and volumetric flasks, a burette, a pipette, an agitator and a separating ball, as well as reagents, namely alkali metal dispersed in mineral oil, 2-methoxyethylether or similar, naphthalene or similar, acidic aqueous solution, nitric acid, mercuric nitrate, indicators and ethanol.
Modifications and improvements can be made to the embodiments described above, without departing from the scope of the present invention. Thus the starting oil can be heated beforehand to a temperature of the order of 200 ° C. to remove the water and the chlorinated solvents which may be present in this oil.
On the other hand, it may be appropriate to carry out a blank test in order to determine the possible presence of chlorinated compounds which can give chlorine ions in the dilution solvents, water, the acidified aqueous solution, the alkali metal and other products involved in the operating mode. In the formula used to calculate the chlorine content of the oil examined, we will deduce, from the value A, the volume in milliliters of titrating solution used for this blank test.
