Echo signals from repeated sonar measurements are digitized and recorded in a two-dimensional data set where echo spacing, alternatively the signal time, constitutes one dimension and the measurement number, or measurement time, constitutes the other dimension. At the desired size of the data set, two-dimensional filtering, adaptive thresholding and morphological processing are performed so that an echogram with less noise can be produced and more secure detection of desired objects. Further shape analysis further improves detection.
