Abstract

Dcke-carbon metal-based anode in a cell for electrolytic recovery of aluminum, comprising an electrically conductive metal substrate resistant to high temperature, where the surface becomes passive and mainly inert to the electrolyte, and a coating adhered to the metal substrate and which makes the surface of the anode electrochemically active for oxidation of oxygen ions present at the electrolyte interface. The metal substrate can be selected from nickel, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, tantalum and the lanthanum row. The active ingredients in the coating are, for example, oxides such as spinels or perovskites, oxyfluorides, phosphides or carbides, in particular ferrites. The active ingredients may be coated on the substrate from a slurry or suspension containing colloidal material and the electrochemically active material.
