Den foreliggende oppfinnelse tilveiebringer et spesifikt sett av genekspresjonsmarkører fra perifere blodleukocytter som er indikative for en vertsrespons til eksponering for, respons til og tilfriskning fra infeksiøse patogeninfeksjoner. Den foreliggende oppfinnelse tilveiebringer videre fremgangsmåter for å identifisere det spesifikke settet av genekspresjonsmarkører, fremgangsmåter for å overvåke sykdomsfremskridelse og behandling av infeksiøse patogeninfeksjoner, fremgangsmåter for å prognostisere inntreden av en infeksiøs patogen infeksjon, og fremgangsmåter for å diagnostisere en infeksiøs patogen infeksjon og identifisere patogenen involvert.
