Den foreliggende oppfinnelse vedrører en framgangsmåte ved rengjøring av en beholderen (3) innrettet for å kunne separere hydrokarboner fra oljeslam, hvor framgangsmåten innbefatter trinnene: å føre damp inn i beholderen (3); å åpne for ventilasjon av beholderen (3); å føre et kjemikalie inn i beholderen (3); å åpne for drenering av slam ut av beholderen (3); å fortsette med tilførsel av damp og kjemikalie i en periode for deretter å stoppe nevnte tilførsel; og å spyle beholderen (3) ved hjelp et fluid. Oppfinnelsen omfatter også en framgangsmåte for under normal drift å redusere oppbygging av oljeslam i beholderen (3).
