Abstract
Fremgangsmåte til behandling av polymerer.Process for treating polymers.
Description
Foreliggende oppfinnelse vedrører en fremgangsmåteThe present invention relates to a method
til behandling av polymerer, og mer spesielt en fremgangsmåte til fjerning eller delvis fjerning av vinylhalogenidmonomer fra vinylhalogenidpolymerer. for treating polymers, and more particularly a process for removing or partially removing vinyl halide monomer from vinyl halide polymers.
Vinylhalogenidpolymerer inneholder generelt absorbert monomer. Vinyl halide polymers generally contain absorbed monomer. The absorption occurs during polymerization and although monomer is removed during recovery of the polymer, it is difficult to produce monomer-free polymer. Unless special precautions are taken, the monomer that is removed during recovery can also pinpoint or cause a danger to the surroundings. Recent discoveries have linked vinyl chloride monomer to the rare cancer angiosarcoma of the liver and other medical problems. It is therefore highly desirable to reduce the level of residual vinyl halide monomers in vinyl halide polymers to the lowest possible value.
According to the present invention, the method for treating a vinyl halide polymer containing vinyl halide monomer comprises subjecting the polymer to dielectric high-frequency heating in the presence of water and a salt which is inert to vinyl halide polymerization.
By the term "a salt which is inert to vinyl halide polymerization" is meant a salt which, under the conditions of the high-frequency heating treatment, does not substantially act as a polymerization catalyst or inhibitor.
Many organic salts are surface-active agents and are used in vinyl halide polymerizations, especially those carried out in aqueous dispersion, where the type and amount of surface-active agent can regulate the nature of the dispersion formed. Some inorganic salts, especially certain insoluble phosphates, are used as dispersants in vinyl chloride suspension polymerization. The treatment of polymer which only contains the amount of a salt that is naturally present as a result of the polymerization process used is not within the scope of the present invention which is directed to the use of added salt, i.e. salt in addition to that required for the polymerization. When the added salt does not take part in the polymerization, it can be added at the beginning of the polymerization or during the polymerization. When the salt is able to take part in the polymerisation, e.g. as a surfactant or dispersant, salt is only "added" if it is added after polymerization has stopped.
Vinylhalogenidpolymeren og monomeren kan inneholdeThe vinyl halide polymer and monomer may contain
Examples of copolymerizable monomers are ethylene, propylene, vinyl acetate, vinyl laurate, vinyl stearate and vinylidene chloride. The present invention is particularly applicable to homopolymers of vinyl chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride with less than 20% by weight of other copolymerizable materials and especially vinyl acetate.
The vinyl halide polymer to be treated is normally a vinyl halide polymer with residual monomer absorbed during polymerization. The amount of monomer will typically not exceed 30,000 ppm (parts by weight) polymer (although larger amounts may be present) when the dielectric heating begins.
The polymer can be treated directly after polymerization or at a later stage in its preparation and processing. The polymer to which the salt is added is preferably resin polymer, i.e. polymer which does not contain the heat stabilizers, lubricants, processing aids, fillers or other materials added to vinyl halide polymer to form a "composition" from which articles can be manufactured, e.g. by extrusion, etc. Polymerization is usually carried out in portions in an aqueous solution or microsuspension or in an aqueous emulsion. The present method is particularly suitable for treating vinyl chloride polymer containing residual monomer, in the form of small spheres, when it is recovered from suspension polymerization.
The procedure can e.g. applied to polymers produced by the emulsion/suspension method, e.g. as described in British Patent Nos. 1,309-582, 1,341,386 and 1,351,461.
As stated above, the salt must be inert to vinyl halide polymerization. However, it is not essential that the salt does not undergo any reaction during polymerization. Thus, ammonium compounds, e.g. ammonium carbonate, which is decomposable when heated, is used. The use of such decomposable compounds can be of value when it is desired that the final polymer has a minimum salt content. A large amount of different metal salts can be used, e.g. salts of sodium, potassium, lead, barium and zinc. The anions can be of inorganic acids such as halides, carbonates, bicarbonates and nitrites.
It is preferred to use a salt which has a certain stabilizing effect on the polymer, e.g. stabilizes it against thermal degradation when heated. Examples of such salts are lead and barium carbonates. It is preferred to avoid the use of salts known to have detrimental effects on the properties of vinyl halide polymers.
The amount of salt present in the polymer that is fed to the high-frequency treatment can e.g. be in the range of 0.001 - 5% by weight, based on the weight of dry polymer, preferably 0.001 - 1% by weight, and most preferably 0.1 - 1% by weight. However, much higher amounts of salt can be used and when the salt is a known filler for the polymer, it can be present in the amount normally used as a filler. Chalk is e.g. a common filler that can be used in quantities of up to e.g. 200% by weight of the vinyl halide polymer or more.
The salt required in the present method can be brought into contact with the polymer in the form of an aqueous solution,
i tilfelle av et vannoppløselig salt, eller som en suspensjon i vann, i det tilfelle man har salter som ikke er oppløselige i vann. in the case of a water-soluble salt, or as a suspension in water, in the case that one has salts that are not soluble in water.
The amount of solution or dispersion and the concentration of the salt are chosen so that the desired salt level in the polymer is obtained.
The aqueous solution or dispersion of a salt is conveniently added to the polymer after the polymerization has stopped and the polymer is ready for recovery. The polymer can be treated with the aqueous solution or dispersion of the salt in the polymerization reactor after the polymerization is fully completed. This can be done in case of polymerizations in aqueous dispersion, i.e. suspension, micro-suspension and emulsion polymerisation, is carried out by adding the salt to the aqueous medium containing the polymer. The polymer must not be subjected to any washing treatments which would remove all the salt before the polymer is subjected to high frequency dielectric heating. Alternatively, the polymer can be recovered from the polymerization reactor and, if desired, washed with water and then the recovered polymer can be brought into contact with the salt.
The polymer is initially in contact with the salt and water when it is subjected to the dielectric high-frequency heating. In addition to reducing the vinyl halide monomer content in the polymer, the high frequency dielectric heating can also remove the water from the polymer. Polymers recovered from an aqueous dispersion prior to drying will often have up to 20% water by weight based on the weight of polymer present. However, any amount of water can be handled by the method according to the invention. Microsuspensions and latexes, which are usually spray-dried, can e.g. instead, it is treated directly using the present method to remove both water and residual monomer.
The method according to the invention can be combined with the method according to Norwegian patent no. (application no. 754255) - In British patent no. the polymer for a high-frequency dielectric heating to remove vinyl halide while retaining water in the polymer, and recovering particulate polymer from the high-frequency dielectric heating step. The presence of water in the polymer is maintained by preventing evaporation of water from the polymer.
The delay for the dielectric high-frequency heating can be carried out in portions or continuously. To avoid overheating, it is preferred to carry out this heating continuously either by passing the polymer through the treatment area in a layer (e.g. of polymer balls on a belt) or by blowing polymer particles through the treatment area. The processing time can be from 0.1 sec. or less up to 100 min., but it is preferably in the range of 1 sec. to 20 min., preferably in the range of 1 sec. - 10 min. The treatment time is preferably chosen so that the polymer being treated reaches a temperature in the range 70 - 120°C, preferably not above 100°C. At higher temperatures, there is a tendency for the polymer to break down.
The dielectric high-frequency heating used in the present method is well known to those skilled in the art of electric heating. Dielectric heating is a method of heating poor electrical conductors by exposing them to an alternating voltage. The electrical power that is transferred to the material in the form of heat is a function of frequency, potential across the material, and the material's dielectric properties. In dielectric low-frequency heating, the material to be heated is placed between electrodes over which an alternating voltage is applied. The applied voltage is regulated so that it does not exceed the breakdown voltage of the material to be heated. The frequencies used for dielectric low-frequency heating are typically in the range 1 - 150 MHz, e.g. 20-100 MHz. Although higher frequencies can be used for dielectric heating between electrodes, the electrodes must be smaller to avoid a high capacity between the electrodes, which leads to excessive damping of the alternating voltage and the spread of the electromagnetic radiation is increased.
Microwave heating is a special case of dielectric high-frequency heating. In microwave heating, the necessary alternating voltage is provided by the electrical component in microwave electromagnetic radiation to which the material to be treated is exposed in an enclosure of conductive material. The material to be treated can be placed inside a resonant cavity in which a standing microwave field is produced or in a waveguide along which microwave electromagnetic radiation is guided. The construction and operation of microwave ovens is known to those skilled in the field of microwave heating.
Bestrålingsintensiteten samt tiden velges fortrinnsvis slik at man får en polymerbehandlingstemperatur i området Any microwave frequency can be used, e.g. in the range 600 - 50,000 MHz and appropriately in the range 900 - 30,000 MHz. It should be noted that there are legal provisions regarding the use of microwaves of certain wavelengths in several countries. The irradiation intensity and time are preferably chosen so that a polymer treatment temperature is obtained in the area
70-120°C, fortrinnsvis 70-100°C.70-120°C, preferably 70-100°C.
Foreliggende fremgangsmåte foretas hensiktsmessig med slike eksponeringstider og påført krafteffekt at man får mindre enn 50 ppm monomer i den behandlede polymer, fortrinnsvis mindre enn 25 ppm og helst mindre enn 0,5 ppm. The present method is suitably carried out with such exposure times and applied power effect that less than 50 ppm of monomer is obtained in the treated polymer, preferably less than 25 ppm and preferably less than 0.5 ppm.
It is assumed that the dielectric high-frequency heating acts selectively on polar molecules and is thus, for example, more strongly absorbed by monomers such as vinyl chloride and by water than by polyvinyl chloride. As a heating process, it thus has the advantage that it selectively heats absorbed monomer inside polymer particles without the necessity of heat transfer to the particle as in a normal heating process.
When treating vinyl halide-containing polymers with residual vinyl halide-containing monomer according to this feature of the invention, free radical initiator can be added at the end of the polymerization reaction. The initiator used can be the same as the initiator used to form the vinyl halide-containing polymer. Additional initiator can alternatively be added during or before polymerization, the initiator or the time of addition being chosen so that sufficient initiator is present in the polymerization product so that it can act as an initiator in the present method.
Additional initiator can be added to the polymer to be treated either together with or separately from the salt.
The polymer can be washed with water after the high frequency dielectric heating to remove at least some of the salt from the polymer. When the salt used will not have any harmful effect on the polymer in the application it is to have, it can remain in the polymer. It is particularly valuable to leave the salt in the polymer when the salt improves the properties of the polymer, i.e. thermal stability.

A sample of a conventional polyvinyl chloride suspension homopolymer was prepared using lauroyl peroxide as initiator and methyl cellulose as suspending agent.
Another 100 g sample of the resin had a monomer content of approx. 1% by weight. This resin was not treated with salt. With irradiation as in example 1, the temperature only reached 43°C within 1 min. The monomer content was still 80 ppm after 10 min. treatment in the microwave.
Eksempel 3Example 3
Det resterende ammonium-karbonatinnhold var 0,4l % (basert på våt harpiks). 1 kg of a wet cake of suspension PVC homopolymer was washed with 2 liters of 5% ammonium carbonate solution by slurrying. The residual ammonium carbonate content was 0.41% (based on wet resin).
This is a comparative experiment (which is not according to the invention). 1 kg of a wet cake of suspension PVC homopolymer was washed with 2 liters of water and centrifuged. The water content was 16.8% and the vinyl chloride content 15-150 ppm.
100 g av oppslemmingen ble bestrålt i en mikrobølge-ovn ved 2450 MHz som i eksempel 1 (10 min., effekt 0,45 Kw). Vanninnholdet falt til 6,7 % og vinylkloridinnholdet til 95 ppm. 100 g of the slurry was irradiated in a microwave oven at 2450 MHz as in example 1 (10 min., power 0.45 Kw). The water content dropped to 6.7% and the vinyl chloride content to 95 ppm.
The polymer used as starting material in the above examples was resin polymer, i.e. polymer that did not contain any of the additives such as heat stabilizers, lubricants, processing aids or fillers, etc., which are present in so-called vinyl halide polymer "blends" from which manufactured products are made.
The "wet cake" mentioned in the examples is the material resulting from centrifugation of polyvinyl chloride to remove the substantial content of water.
