By inhibiting the concentration of HIV complexes bound to lymphoid tissues, the burden of virally infected cells is reduced, and the effectiveness of anti-retroviral agents is increased, and virus inactivation in the bloodstream is increased. The reduced concentration or absence of HIV in lymphoid tissue prevents infection of CD4+ T cells therein.
