Polycykliske alkaloider med formel (I) formel l hvor R, er H, C,^ alkyl eller C^2 aryl eventuelt substituert med polare grupper; R2 og R3 er uavhengig H, OH, C,^ alkyl, -C(NH)-NH2, en positivt ladet gruppe eller C7.13 aralkyl eventuelt substituert med NH2, OH, C,.6 alkyl eller halogen; eller R2 og R3 danner tilsammen en 5 til 6-leddet ring eventuelt inneholdende et heteroatom; R4er H, C,^ alkyl, OR6, SR6 eller N(R6)2, hvor hver F^ er uavhengig H, C,.3 alkyl; X er O, S, SO, SO2, N-R5 eller C-(R5)2, hvor hver R5 er uavhengig H, C,^ alkyl eller C7.13 aralkyl eventuelt avbrutt med ett eller flere heteroatomer; n er et helt tall fra O til 2; m er et helt tall fra O til 3; med det forbehold at når X er CH2, er R, ikke CH3, R2 og R3 er ikke begge H, R4 er ikke OH, m er ikke 3 og n er ikke 0. Disse virker som antagonister på den ionotrope NMDA (N-metyl-(D)- aspartinsyre) reseptor.
