Abstract
To provide a process for producing a glass substrate for a magnetic recording medium excellent in smoothness of principal planar surfaces with little variation in thickness among different lots of glass substrate, by preventing clogging of a polishing pad in a principal planar surface-polishing step thereby to reduce frequency of dressing treatment and to stabilize the polishing rate. This process for producing a glass substrate for a magnetic recording medium, comprises a shaping step of processing a glass base plate into a disk-shaped glass substrate having a circular hole in the center, a principal planar surface-polishing step of polishing planar surfaces of the glass substrate, and a cleaning step of cleaning the glass substrate, wherein the principal planar surface-polishing step includes a rough-polishing step of polishing the principal planar surfaces of the glass substrate in a polishing depth (removal amount) of at least 5 µm in total thickness of both surfaces, and the rough-polishing step is a step of polishing the principal planar surfaces of the glass substrate by using a polishing pad which internally contains foams, the average diameter of the foams that are open at the polishing surface being from 80 to 300 µm, and which has a compressibility of from 1.1 to 2.5%, and a polishing slurry containing abrasive grains.
