Description

Dlatego w znanych sposobach oczyszcza¬ nia solanki wytracone ciala stale oddziela sie na drodze flokulacji, dekantacji i Mtracji, prowadza¬ cych do otrzymania szlamowatej pozostalosci. In the electrolytic production of chlorine and caustic soda in both diaphragm and mercury electrolyzers, sodium chloride solution is used as the electrolyte. This solution, hereinafter referred to as brine, is prepared by dissolving ordinary salt used for industrial purposes. Before subjecting the brine to electrolysis, it is always necessary to remove impurities introduced with the salt. Depending on the origin of the raw material (salt), the content of impurities varies, but a significant part of them consists of calcium and magnesium cations, and smaller amounts of some heavy cations (iron, vanadium, etc.). Known methods of purifying brine from impurities contained in it consist in precipitating these impurities in the form of hydroxides or carbonates, e.g. in the form of Mg(OH)2, Fe(OH)3, CaOO3, etc., by adding sodium hydroxide and sodium or barium carbonate to the brine. The precipitated solid deposits have very small particle sizes and are semi-colloidal and are difficult to separate. Therefore, in known brine purification methods, the precipitated solids are separated by flocculation, decantation, and filtration, resulting in a sludge-like residue. When brine is electrolyzed in mercury cells, the sludge resulting from the brine purification operation is contaminated with mercury, the presence of which complicates the removal of purification residues due to environmental pollution. Therefore, in known brine purification methods, the cations contained therein, constituting impurities (Ca, Mg, Fe, etc.), are removed by precipitation, decantation, and filtration. The brine purification method according to the invention involves removing impurities from the brine by solvent extraction. The brine is brought into contact with an immiscible organic phase, which causes the impurities to transfer from the brine to the organic phase in the extraction stage, which produces pure brine and an organic phase containing the impurities. In the next stage, called the re-extraction stage, these impurities are removed from the organic phase by treating it with acid. This produces an organic phase suitable for recycling to the extraction stage. The impurities are removed from the system in the form of a concentrated solution of the appropriate salts, typically a mercury-free solution of calcium, magnesium, iron, etc. chlorides. In general, the method of the invention involves extracting the impurities from the brine and removing them from the process in the form of a concentrated solution of these impurities. This is achieved in two basic steps, extraction and re-extraction, with the organic phase serving as an intermediate carrier. The organic phase used in the method according to the invention consists of three components, only one of which is an active component, while the others act as a diluent and modifier. The diluent is the main component of the organic phase. It serves as a carrier and solvent for the active component. It is composed of fractions derived from the distillation of crude oil, such as kerosene or gas oil. An aliphatic ester of phosphoric acid, a phosphine oxide or a long-chain alkyl alcohol with a molecular weight above 1000 is used as a modifier. It plays a secondary role in the organic phase, its concentration is limited and its absence in the The organic phase facilitates or supports phase separation in the extraction stages. The active ingredient of the organic phase is alkylphosphoric acid with a molecular weight above 200, preferably di-2-ethylhexylphosphoric acid, known by the simplified name D2EHPA. It is the actual reagent of the organic phase taking part in the extraction. This acid reacts with impurities, and these reactions are the essential reactions occurring in the process according to the invention. These reactions can be represented by the following equations, in which, for simplicity, di-2-ethylhexylphosphoric acid is represented by the formula RH and the acid anion by the radical R, wherein both the acid of the formula RH and the radical R are always present in the organic phase: 3iRH +i Fe +++ ^ RaFe + 3H + 2RH + Ca++ z±R*Ca + 2H + 2RH + Mg+ + ^ RatMig + 2H + [1] L2] 13] The extraction of each cation depends on the pH of the solution and the extraction sequence is as follows: FeCatMig. For complete extraction of all impurities, it is necessary that reactions [1], [2] and [3] proceed in the direction from left to right, which is achieved by neutralization of the formed hydrogen ions. This neutralization is carried out simultaneously with the electro-extraction operation or precedes the extraction. In principle, both processes are chemically equivalent, and the differences in their conduct are shown, for example, below for the case of calcium extraction. _ Reaction Neutralization with simultaneous extraction or with regulated pH proceeds as follows: 2RH +;Ga ++ + OH- ^Ra*Ca -h2H*0 {4] The neutralization reaction before extraction proceeds as follows: 2RH + 2Na+ +/20HT ^ 2(RNa + 2H*0 [5] 2RNa'+,Ca ++ ^ R*Ca + 2Na ^ [6] In the first stage, the acid is neutralized with caustic soda and as a result of the reaction with brine, Na+ is replaced by Ca++. The sum of reactions [5] and [6] is * equivalent to reaction [4]. In each case, in order to extract the impurities from the brine, it is necessary to neutralize 10 15 20 25 30 45 50 55 60 65 acid formed during extraction by adding caustic soda to the system. Preferably, extraction is carried out at a pH of 4-9, which is achieved by adding alkali, especially caustic soda. After extracting the impurities from the brine, the next step of the process is re-extraction, which involves transferring the impurities contained in the organic phase to an aqueous phase other than the brine. This is achieved by bringing the organic phase into contact with a strong acid of appropriate concentration, preferably hydrochloric acid. The reactions taking place in the re-extraction step are reactions [1], [2] and [3], proceeding from right to left. Then, the cationic "impurity" is exchanged for a hydrogen ion. Both the extraction and The re-extraction can be carried out in any solvent extraction equipment, and is preferably carried out in a mixer-settler. This type of equipment was used in the examples given below. The time required for mixing or contacting the organic phase with the aqueous phase to achieve equilibrium depends on the concentration of impurities in the organic and aqueous phases and on the degree of mixing, but it does not exceed 10 minutes, preferably 3 minutes. Phase separation after extraction or re-extraction does not present any difficulties if the organic phase contains a suitable modifier. The temperature is maintained at 10-90°C throughout the process. The concentration of acid, preferably di-2-ethylhexylphosphoric acid, in the organic phase is 0.4-20%. volume/volume and the concentration of the modifier, especially tributyl phosphate, 0-16% volume/volume. The selection of appropriate concentrations depends on the type and concentration of the impurities. In the re-extraction stage, any inorganic acids are used, preferably solutions of 1-3 molar hydrochloric acid. The method according to the invention is explained in more detail in the drawing, which shows a diagram of the brine purification process according to the invention, and in the following examples. Example I. This example shows the effect of di-2-ethylhexylphosphoric acid concentration on brine purification. Brine with the following composition: NaCl - 305 g, Ca - 140 mg/l, Mg - 69 mg/l, Fe — 10 mg/l is brought into contact with three organic phases with D2EHPA concentrations of 2, 5, and 20%*. During extraction, the pH of the brine is adjusted by adding caustic soda so that the pH after extraction is 6-6.5. A brine with the following impurity content is obtained: Example II. Example III shows that the presence of tributyl phosphate as a modifier in the organic phase has a negligible effect on the extraction results, but significantly shortens the time required for phase separation after extraction. 106943 Sample No. 1 2 3 Organic phase % D2EHPA (v/v) 2 5 20 Contaminant content in the brine after extraction mg/l | Ca . 16 8 5 3Vfe 15 9 4 Fe 1 1 1 The brine, purified in a single extraction stage, has the following composition: NaO — 206 g/l, Ca — 140 mg/l, Mg — 150 mg/l, Fe — 2 mg/l. This brine is brought into contact with the organic phases in a volume ratio of 1:1 at a temperature of 40°C and stirred for 10 minutes. During extraction, caustic soda is added so that the pH of the brine after extraction is 6.5-7.0*. The time required for phase separation is measured and the content of impurities in the obtained purified brine is determined, obtaining the following results: Sample nsrl 1 2 Composition organic phases*] % by volume by volume D2EHPA 5 5 TBP* 0 2 Phase separation time; sec. 110 70 Contaminant content in brine mg/l Mg 34 36 Ca. 8 6 Fe 1 1 * TBP means tributyl phosphate Example III. This example demonstrates the possibility of re-extraction of contaminants extracted from brine from the organic phase by contacting it with an acid. Organic phase with the following composition: D2EHPA Tributyl phosphate Gas oil Ca Mg Fe 21% by volume 0y5% by volume 97^5% by volume 450 mg/l 200 mg/l 2 mg/l is subjected to a process of repeated extraction with a 4 molar hydrochloric acid solution, carried out at a temperature of 30°C at a ratio of the organic phase to the acid solution of 50°C in a two-stage process carried out in a radioactive manner. In this way, a purified organic phase and a hydrochloric acid solution containing impurities are obtained. The obtained phases contain the following amounts of impurities: * organic phase: Oa — 4 mg/l, Mg — 6 mg/l, Fe — 1 mg/l aqueous solution: Ca — 23 g/l, Mg — 9.6 g/l, Fe — 0.1 g/l, hydrochloric acid [ 30 g/l 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 50 55 Example IV. This example gives the results obtained in the brine purification process, carried out continuously in a polytechnic installation. The schematic course of this process is presented in the figure, where the extraction stage (four-stage) is marked with the symbol I, the secondary extraction stage (two-stage) is marked with the symbol II, the organic phase and the aqueous phase flow in countercurrent, and the individual streams are marked with Arabic numerals. The organic phase used has the following composition: di-2-ethylhexylphosphoric acid, tributyl phosphate 1% v/v, gas oil 0.25% v/v, 98.75% v/v. To regulate the pH during extraction, a caustic soda solution at a concentration of 20 g/l is used. The following table shows the sequence, yields and compositions of the basic mixtures shown in the figure and marked with Arabic numerals.
