However, this process yields 4-aryl-2(1H)-quinazolinones in low yield. The aim of the invention is to improve the yield of the desired products. According to the invention, the dehydrogenation is carried out in the presence of an inorganic metal compound, being an oxide, hydroxide or salt of a metal, with the exception of magnesium, aluminum and alkaline earth metals, which compound forms a metal sulfide under the reaction conditions. According to the invention, the process is preferably carried out at a temperature of 125-250°C, preferably 130-200°C, and especially 135-200°C. The reaction is carried out in an organic solvent inert under the reaction conditions. Ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, ethoxyethoxyethanol, dioxane, toluene, xylene, and p-cymene are preferably used as solvents. It is usually advantageous to use a solvent boiling at the desired reaction temperature, since then the reaction can be carried out while maintaining the reaction mixture at reflux. An example of such a solvent is p-cymene, which boils at the temperature most favorable for the reaction. The molar ratio of sulfur to quinazoline starting product may vary, but is preferably high, at least 1.7:1. The upper limit of this ratio is not critical, but it is unnecessary and unjustified to use a molar ratio of sulfur to starting product greater than 6:1. A suitable ratio is from 1.9:1 to 4:1, preferably from 2:1 to 3:1. As indicated above, a metal compound is used which forms a sulphide under the reaction conditions. The alkali metals, magnesium, aluminum and beryllium are excluded from this, and for practical reasons it is not preferred to use rare earth metals and metals having an atomic number of 84 or greater. Preferred metals include calcium, titanium, zirconium, chromium, lead, molybdenum, manganese, iron, tin, cobalt, nickel, palladium, copper, silver, zinc, cadmium, mercury, antimony and bismuth, and especially calcium, iron or tin. The metal compound may be in the form of a salt, e.g., a salt with a strong acid such as a halide, e.g., chloride, or it may be a sulphate or nitrate, but preferably an oxide or hydroxide, especially an oxide, is used. Preferred metal compounds are calcium oxide, zinc oxide, and especially ferric oxide. Many compounds which may be used, e.g., calcium chloride, react with hydrogen sulphide to form an acidic medium, and the metal sulphides formed may be unstable or soluble in such a medium. In such cases, it is advantageous to add a hydroxide base, e.g., an alkali metal hydroxide or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, to the reaction mixture, or to use an excess of the metal compound if it is a hydroxide base. Preferably, an alkali metal hydroxide, e.g. potassium or sodium hydroxide, is used. The molar ratio of metal compound to quinazoline starting material is preferably at least 1:1, and preferably at least 1.5:1. The upper limit of this ratio is not critical, but a ratio higher than 10:1 provides no additional advantage. A suitable ratio is from 1.8:1 to 6:1, preferably 2:1 to 4:1, especially from 2.1:1 to 3:1. If the hydroxide base is used, it is preferred that its molar ratio to the quinazoline starting material is at least 1:1, or more preferably at least 1.5:1, preferably 1.8 to 6:1, especially from 2:1 to 3:1. The process of the invention can be carried out at pressures below or above atmospheric pressure, but it is most preferred to use atmospheric pressure. It is also advantageous to carry out the process in an inert gas atmosphere or to pass a constant stream of an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, over the surface of the reaction mixture. The reaction usually lasts from about 1 to 15 hours. The process according to the invention has a significantly higher yield than the corresponding known process, which does not use a metal compound and which usually results in a mixture of the desired (1H)-quinazolinone-2 with the corresponding 3,4-dihydrogen derivative. The compounds of formula 2 are either known compounds or are prepared from known starting products by methods known from the literature. In the compounds of formulae 1 and 2, the hydrocarbon radical Rt with 1-8 carbon atoms may be, for example, an alkyl radical with 1-6 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical with 1-6 carbon atoms, or a cycloalkyl radical with 1-6 carbon atoms. 3-7 carbon atoms, a cycloalkylalkyl radical of 4-7 carbon atoms containing a cycloalkyl radical of 3-6 carbon atoms with an alkyl radical of 1-2 carbon atoms, or a phenyl, benzyl or 2-phenylethyl radical. Examples of halogen-substituted hydrocarbon radicals Rt are alkyl radicals of 1-6 carbon atoms substituted with one, two or three fluorine, chlorine or bromine atoms, and phenyl, benzyl or 2-phenylethyl radicals substituted with one, two or three fluorine, chlorine or bromine atoms. In radicals containing 2 or 3 halogen atoms as substituents, these are preferably atoms of one halogen. In compounds of formulae 1 and 2, the substituent R 2 is preferably a group of formula 3 or 4, where in formula 3 Y and Y t are identical or different and represent hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine or bromine atoms, alkyl or alkoxy radicals with 1-3 carbon atoms or trifluoromethyl radicals, wherein when one of these substituents is a trifluoromethyl radical, the other is a hydrogen atom, and in formula 4 the substituent Yt is a hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom or an alkyl or alkoxy radical with 1-3 carbon atoms. The compounds of formula 1 are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and from this point of view R1 preferably is an alkyl radical with 1-6 carbon atoms or a cyclopropylmethyl radical, more preferably an alkyl radical with 1-6 carbon atoms, especially an isopropyl radical, R5 preferably is a phenyl radical, optionally containing 1 or 2 of the substituents described above, and especially a phenyl or p-fluorophenyl radical, while Rf and R4 may be hydrogen atoms, but preferably at least one of these substituents is a radical an alkyl radical having 1-3 carbon atoms, in particular a methyl radical, e.g. in position 7, or an alkoxy radical having 1-3 carbon atoms, such as a methoxy radical, e.g. in position 6. Most preferably, 7-methyl-1-isopropyl-4-phenyl(1H)-2-quinazolinone and 1-isopropyl-4-p-fluorophenyl-7-methyl(1H)-2-quinazolinone are prepared. The following examples illustrate the process according to the invention. Example 1 7-Methyl-1-isopropyl-4-phenyl-(1H)-2-quinazolinone. A mixture of 200 ml of p-cymene, 40 g of ferric oxide and 7 g of sulfur was heated to boiling (about 175°C). A hot (130°C) solution of 28.2 g of 7-methyl-1-isopropyl-4-phenyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro(1H)-2-quinazolinone in 200 ml of p-cymene was added dropwise to the mixture over a period of 40 minutes. The resulting solution was refluxed for 3.5 hours, during which time 1.8 ml of water was collected in the Dean Stark separator. The solution is then cooled to 28°C, filtered through a layer of acetate and washed with four 55 ml portions of toluene. The toluene washings are extracted with 4 N hydrochloric acid for 50 min, and the filtrate, which is a solution in p-cymene, is extracted with 350 ml of 4 N hydrochloric acid. The acidic extracts are combined and extracted with 100 ml of toluene, discarding the toluene extracts. The solution remaining after the toluene extraction is treated with 350 ml of toluene and 110 g of 50% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The phases are then separated, the toluene phase is washed with two 100 ml portions of water, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and 65 and evaporated under reduced pressure. The solid residue was recrystallized from ethyl acetate to give 7-methyl-1-isopropyl-4-phenyl(1H)-2-quinazolinone, melting at 139-141°C, in a yield of 72%. Example II. 1-Isopropyl-4-fluorophenyl-7-methyl(1H)-2-quinazolinone. A mixture of 67 ml of xylene, 13.3 g of ferric oxide and 2.5 g of sulfur was heated under nitrogen under a reflux condenser to boiling, and then a hot (100-110°C) solution of 10 g of 7-methyl-1-isopropyl-4-p-fluorophenyl-2-quinazolinone was added dropwise over a period of 20 minutes. 10-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro(1H)quinazolin-2-one in 100 ml of xylene. The resulting solution was refluxed for 10 hours, during which time water was collected in a Dean Stark separator. The mixture was then cooled to 80°C, filtered through a layer of acetylcellulose, and the filtrate and filter cake were washed with three 50 ml portions of toluene. The filtrates were combined and extracted successively with 200 ml, 100 ml, and 50 ml of 4 N hydrochloric acid. The acid extracts were combined, washed with 100 ml of toluene, the toluene extract was discarded, and the remaining acid solution was treated, with stirring and cooling, with 200 ml of toluene and 115 g of 50% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The phases were then separated, the aqueous phase was washed with two 100 ml portions of toluene, the toluene solutions were combined, washed with two 100 ml portions of water, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered through acetylcellulose, and evaporated, yielding 8.8 g (90% of theory) of yellow crystalline product. Recrystallization from ethyl acetate gave the title compound, melting at 175-176°C, in 67% yield. Example III: 1-Isopropyl-4-phenyl-7-methyl(1H)-2-quinazolinone. Mixture: 28.2 g 7-Methyl-1-isopropyl-4-phenyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro(1H)quinazolin-2-one, 9.6 g of sulfur, 10 g of sodium hydroxide, 20 g of calcium chloride and 200 ml of 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethanol were kept under nitrogen at 150°C for 2 hours. Then it was cooled to 65°C. 500 ml of benzene was added and the mixture was cooled to 65°C with stirring. The liquid phase was then decanted. The organic phase was washed with water, evaporated and the oily residue was dissolved in a mixture of 100 ml of benzene and 100 ml of 50% aqueous hydrochloric acid. The resulting mixture was stirred for 1 hour at room temperature. The phases are separated and the acidic phase is treated with 50 min of benzene. The acidic phase is neutralized with 50% sodium hydroxide solution, extracted with 150 ml of benzene, and the benzene extracts are washed with water until neutral, then dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated to give the crude product. This product is recrystallized from ethyl acetate, giving 1-isopropyl-4-phenyl-7-methyl(1H)-2-quinazolinone, melting at 141-142°C, in a yield of 56%. Example IV. 7-Methyl-1-isopropyl-4-(p-fluorophenyl)(1H)-2-quinazolinone. To a mixture of 4.3 g of sulfur, 6.8 g of zinc oxide, and 67 ml of a mixture of xylenes, To the boiling point (about 138°C) under reflux and nitrogen atmosphere, a previously heated (100-115°C) solution of 10.0 g of 7-methyl-1-isopropyl-4-(p-fluorophenyl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro(1H)-2-quinazolinone in 100 ml of a mixture of xylenes was added with stirring. After the addition was complete (about 20 minutes), the mixture was boiled under reflux overnight, cooled and filtered through acetylcellulose. The precipitate was washed with toluene, and the filtrate and washings were extracted four times with 4 N hydrochloric acid. The extracts were washed with 100 ml of toluene, and while cooling in an ice bath, 115 g of 50% sodium hydroxide solution. The aqueous phase is extracted with two 100 ml portions of toluene, the organic phase is washed with water, dried, filtered, and evaporated under reduced pressure. The yellow solid residue, constituting the crude product, is dissolved in 100 ml of ethyl acetate, filtered, concentrated to 50 ml, and cooled to 0°C. The precipitate obtained is recrystallized from ethyl acetate to give 7-methyl-1-isopropyl-4-(p-fluorophenyl)-1H)-2-quinazolinone, melting at 145-146.5°C, in a yield of 71%. Example V: Using the procedure described in Example IV, but using zinc oxide instead of zinc oxide, 25 equivalent amount of lead dioxide, the same compound is obtained in 80% yield of crude product, of which one half (40% yield) is the desired product. Example VI. In a manner analogous to that described in each of Examples 1-5, using the appropriate starting materials in approximately equivalent amounts, the following compounds are obtained: 5,7-dimethyl-1-isopropyl-4-phenyl(1H)quinazolin-2-one, melting at 145-147°C, in 68% yield according to Example 1; 1-isopropyl-7-methyl-4-(p-methylphenyl)(1H)quinazolin-2-one, melting at 156-157°C, in 1-isopropyl-7-methyl-4-(2-thienyl)-1H)quinazolin-2-one having a melting point of 154-156°C in a yield of 45% according to Example 1 and 1-cyclopropylmethyl-6-methoxy-4-phenyl)-1H)quinazolin-2-one having a melting point of 115-116°C in a yield of 45-68% according to Example 1.
