Description

The subject of the invention is a method of obtaining nanoparticles such as quantum dots and other nanometric size clusters based on a zinc oxide core covered with multifunctional ligands.

Patrząc w przyszłość, potencjalne zastosowanie nanocząstek obejmuje możliwość tworzenia nanoobwodów elektronicznych, przechowywania pojedynczych bitów z wykorzystaniem kropek kwantowych, zastosowanie w medycynie (nośniki leków i genów, detekcja protein, termalne niszczenie komórek rakowych, wzmocnienie kontrastu w MRI magnetycznym rezonansie jądrowym).Nanoparticles are a class of materials whose properties are defined by the characteristics of particles smaller than 100 nm in size. Changing the shape and size of nanoparticles affects such properties as: color, chemical reactivity, magnetic properties and charge transport in semiconductor systems. A key element is the use of nanoparticles in the design of materials whose properties can be controlled by the nanoparticle size scale. Nanoparticles can be used as components of devices and functional systems using new technologies. Looking to the future, the potential application of nanoparticles includes the possibility of creating nano-electronic circuits, storing single bits using quantum dots, applications in medicine (drug and gene carriers, protein detection, thermal destruction of cancer cells, MRI contrast enhancement, nuclear magnetic resonance).

Czynniki te są wypadkową użytej metody otrzymywania nanocząsteczek, co w konsekwencji ma wpływ na zastosowanie otrzymanych nanomateriałówZinc oxide nanoparticles are one of the most intensively researched and widely used materials. This is due to their physico-chemical properties, such as: transparency, high mechanical strength, electrical conductivity and piezoelectric properties. The physical and chemical properties of nanoparticles depend on many factors, such as: particle size, shape, dispersion ease, surface morphology and composition, and crystal structure. These properties are also strongly determined by the elemental composition of the zinc oxide core. These factors are the result of the method used to obtain nanoparticles, which in turn has an impact on the application of the obtained nanomaterials

Quantum dots are a separate group of materials with nanomeric sizes. These are particles with sizes reaching several nanometers. From the application point of view, the change of the physical properties of semiconductor materials is very important in the production processes of systems using techniques such as spintronics, optoelectronics, quantum computers or photocatalysis. Changes in the physical properties of semiconductors are possible thanks to the application of impurities in the form of quantum dots to the surface. The development of this technology contributed to the description by P. V. Radovanovic and D. R. Gamelin in J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2001, 123 p. 12207 solution synthesis of high-quality colloidal quantum dot solutions (DMS-QDs). P. V. Radovanovic in the article by V. Radovanovic, N. S. Norbert, Κ. E. McNally, D. R. Gamelin in J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2002, 124 p. 15193 describes a method of depositing zinc oxide quantum dots on transition metals such as cobalt and nickel. Zinc oxide quantum dots can be used in the processes of data recording and storage as well as the production of nanolasers. The fluorescence properties of quantum dots are used in the search for appropriate DNA sequences under the microscope, by recognizing them by the emitted light. Quantum dots can find application in biochemical sensors. Currently, quantum dots based on cadmium sulphide are widely used. Due to the high toxicity of cadmium compounds in biological research, zinc oxide compounds can find a wide application, displacing the previously used quantum spots based on heavy metals.

Chem. B 2006 r., tom 110 strony 4099-4104 polegająca na termicznym rozkładzie dichelatowych związków cynku prowadząca do otrzymania cząstek tlenku cynku o rozmiarach od 3,9 do 14 nm, otoczonych oktyloaminą. Cząstki te wykazują właściwości fotoluminescencyjne.Several methods for the synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles are widely known and used, including physical and chemical methods. Physical methods require synthesis at high temperature, in the range of 500 - 1500 ° C. Chemical methods allow the synthesis to be carried out at lower temperatures, usually in the range of 100 - 200 ° C. As described in the article by Chem. Commun. from 2003, pages 2068-2069 by Chang G. Kim, Kiwhan Sung, Taek-Mo Chung, Duk Y. Jung, Yunsoo Kim known is the method of obtaining zinc oxide nanoparticles by thermal decomposition of the organometallic compound ethylpropoxy zinc EtZnO and Pr, in an inert atmosphere , in the presence of a complexing ligand. The method allows to obtain particles with a size of a few nanometers with photoluminescent properties. The obtained nanoparticles are characterized by the existence of a zinc oxide core surrounded by molecules of a complexing ligand. Another method of obtaining zinc oxide nanoparticles is the method described by P. O'Brien in the article J. Phys. Chem. B 2006, vol. 110 pages 4099-4104 consisting in the thermal decomposition of dichelate zinc compounds to obtain zinc oxide particles with sizes from 3.9 to 14 nm, surrounded by octylamine. These particles exhibit photoluminescent properties.

Ligandy używane opcjonalnie w sposobie według wynalazku US 2006/0245998 mają zapobiegać procesowi aglomeracji nanocząstek w roztworze. The above exemplary methods for the synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles require the reaction at elevated temperature. The use of organozinc compounds as precursors in the synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles allowed for the reaction to be carried out under mild conditions. The synthesis described in US 2006/0245998 is that an organometallic compound in an anhydrous organic solvent is brought into contact with an oxidizing agent. The organometallic compound may be a zinc coordination complex. The solvent may optionally contain an additional compound which is referred to herein as a ligand to act as a dispersant. The ligands optionally used in the method according to the invention US 2006/0245998 are intended to prevent the process of agglomeration of nanoparticles in solution. The growth of nanoparticles is usually a spontaneous and difficult to control process. The particles age over time, e.g. as a result of the formation of larger agglomerates, which significantly affects their physico-chemical properties. Alkyl compounds, especially those containing from 6 to 20 carbon atoms, amines, especially primary ones, acids, especially carboxylic acids, thiols, phosphorus compounds, ethers, can be used as ligands. As solvents, anhydrous organic solvents such as THF, toluene, anisole, heptane are preferably proposed. Organic and inorganic compounds, oxygen and steam can be used as oxidizing agents. The process is preferably carried out at atmospheric pressure and at a temperature of 0-200 ° C. According to the authors of the invention, the shape and size of nanoparticles are controlled by the synthesis conditions, which are: the nature of the organometallic compound, the possible use of a ligand, the type of solvent, incubation time and the time of reaction with oxygen and water. The growth of nanoparticles is a process lasting from several to several hours after the entire organometallic compound has reacted with oxygen and water. The thus obtained zinc oxide nanoparticles are free of hydroxyl groups and have a vurcite structure.

The method according to the patent US 2006/0245998, however, does not allow to obtain quantum dots and other nanometric forms with a fully defined structure, both of the zinc oxide core and its surroundings, of nanoparticles with a ZnO core having a structure different from the wurcite structure and surrounded by multifunctional anionic ligands. Moreover, the nanoparticles obtained by the method according to the description of US 2006/0245998 do not have a precisely defined elemental composition and a precisely defined surface structure.

The method of producing nanometer-sized zinc oxide structures according to the invention is characterized in that the organozinc precursor in an organic solvent is treated with an oxidizing agent, an alkyl zinc compound stabilized with a bidentate or multidentate ligand L having the general formula [LZnR] n as the organozinc precursor. wherein L is a bi- or multifunctional ligand of an anionic nature, which is an anionic organic compound containing at least two basic Lewis centers of the nitrogen-nitrogen, nitrogen-oxygen type, R is a C1-C10 alkyl group, straight or branched, benzyl, phenyl , cyclohexyl, and n is from 1 to 10.

2+ 2Zn2+, grupy hydroksylowe oraz jony tlenkowe O2-. W wyniku reakcji prekursora z wodą i tlenem możliwe jest otrzymanie materiałów z rdzeniem tlenkowo-cynkowym otoczonych ligandami wielofunkcyjnymi o wielkości nanometrycznej. W zależności od warunków prowadzenia reakcji: stężenia, czasu prowadzenia reakcji, temperatury prowadzenia reakcji, czasu inkubacji - czasu pozostawienia kompleksu przed jego utlenieniem, rodzaju użytego rozpuszczalnika, zatężania roztworu w czasie prowadzenia reakcji, stężenia tlenu oraz wody itd., możliwe jest otrzymanie klasterów tlenkowo-cynkowych otoczonych ligandami wielofunkcyjnymi, kropek kwantowych z rdzeniem tlenkowo-cynkowym, cząstek z rdzeniem tlenkowo-cynkowym o rozmiarach nanometrycznych.2+ 2Zn 2+ , hydroxyl groups and O 2- oxide ions. As a result of the reaction of the precursor with water and oxygen, it is possible to obtain materials with a zinc oxide core surrounded by multifunctional ligands of nanometric size. Zastosowanie prekursora cynkoorganicznego opartego na wielofunkcyjnym ligandzie anionowym pozwala również na zwiększoną kontrolę wzrostuThe method according to the invention makes it possible to obtain nanometric zinc oxide objects in the form of single crystals in the vicinity of ligands, thanks to which it is possible to unequivocally determine their structure using the X-ray structure and define their elemental composition. The use of an organozinc precursor based on a multifunctional anionic ligand also allows for increased growth control

In the systems described, the anionic multifunctional ligands are linked to the zinc oxide core by strong covalent or donor-acceptor bonds, which are further enhanced by the chelating effect and the cooperative interaction of multiple donor sites linked together. As a result, greater stabilization of the zinc oxide core is provided, and thus the durability of the obtained nanoparticles is increased, and the process of their agglomeration is reduced. It should be noted that the stabilization of the cores and the degree of aggregation of nanoparticles obtained with the ligands used according to the method known from US 2006/0245998 takes place through much weaker and more labile non-covalent interactions between the polar zinc oxide surface and the neutral ligand functional group.

The surface of the nanoparticles obtained according to the method described in the patent US 2006/0245998 is poorly defined, which makes its further modification very difficult. The method, which is the subject of the present invention, makes it possible to obtain nanoparticles with a much greater degree of surface differentiation and offers convenient possibilities of its modification. For example, the use of ligand surroundings with appropriately selected terminal functional groups enables the creation of new, well-defined macroscopic systems through a controlled process of nanoparticle self-assembly as a result of intermolecular interactions.

The durability of the connections of the zinc oxide core with the environment of multifunctional ligands, combined with the ease of modifying the multifunctional ligand backbone (e.g. by introducing functional groups such as amino, urethane, thiol, hydroxyl, carboxylate, etc. into its backbone) creates a wide range of functionalisation of the obtained surfaces nanoparticles. Another very valuable advantage of the described method is the possibility of synthesizing chiral nanoparticles thanks to the use of organozinc compounds based on chiral multifunctional anionic ligands as precursors. Appropriate functionalization of the surface of the zinc oxide nanoparticles enables their application in many fields, including as markers in molecular biology. Such modifications of the surface of the nanoparticles obtained according to US 2006/0245998 are significantly limited due to the nature of the connection systems of neutral ligands with the zinc oxide surface discussed earlier in the latter and the nature of the ligands used.
