Description

Opis wynalazkuDescription of the invention

The subject of the invention is a composite based on polyamide with the addition of basalt dust particles and a method of producing such a composite.

Basalt is one of the most common rock materials on earth. Basalt rock is formed during volcanic eruptions, especially during floods. Its composition is most often dominated by silica SiO2 with a content of 45-55% and other compounds such as aluminum oxide ALO3, calcium oxide CaO, iron oxide FeO and magnesium oxide MgO. Basalt occurs in all geographical latitudes and is a cheap and widely available mineral resource. So far, basalt material has been used mainly in the construction industry, where it is used in solid form and as an aggregate. During the mechanical processing of basalt, numerous fractions of this mineral are created, including basalt dust, the current use of which is mainly in gardening as an ecological mineral fertilizer.

Technical applications of basalt dust are related to the construction industry, where basalt powder can be a component of cement mixtures. An example of such a solution is patent description CN102503191A, which discusses the possibility of using basalt material in an activated form to modify cement admixtures. This treatment is intended to increase the strength of cement and increase its resistance to weather conditions.

Innym przykładem zastosowania cząstek bazaltu jest opis patentowy CN111172419A z 2020 roku, gdzie bazalt w postaci proszkowej stanowi składnik mieszaniny stopowej z aluminium. Another example of the use of basalt particles is patent description CN111172419A from 2020, where basalt in powder form is a component of an alloy mixture with aluminum. This type of material is intended for the production of metal foams with increased durability.

The use of basalt dust in the polymer processing industry included primarily applications related to the processing of chemically cured resins. Publication US20100012004A1 from 2005 discusses the possibility of using basalt dust as a component of compositions based on epoxy or polyester resin. In the case of this solution, the key aspect was the use of fibrous reinforcement in the form of mineral or polymer fibers to obtain a composite with anti-ballistic properties. Basalt in powder form is not a key ingredient in the discussed solution and is used as an additional component.

Z publikacji Mateusz Barczewski, Olga Mysiukiewicz, Danuta Matykiewicz, Arkadiusz Kloziński, Jacek Andrzejewski, Adam Piasecki, Synergistic effect of different basalt fillers and annealing on the structure and properties of polylactide composites, Polymer Testing, Volume 89, 2020, 106628, ISSN 0142-9418, znane jest stosowanie pyłu bazaltowego jako napełniacza w kompozytach polilaktydowych. From the publication Mateusz Barczewski, Olga Mysiukiewicz, Danuta Matykiewicz, Arkadiusz Kloziński, Jacek Andrzejewski, Adam Piasecki, Synergistic effect of different basalt fillers and annealing on the structure and properties of polylactide composites, Polymer Testing, Volume 89, 2020, 106628, ISSN 0142- 9418, the use of basalt dust as a filler in polylactide composites is known.

Natomiast z publikacji Mateusz Barczewski, Kamila Salasinska, Arkadiusz Kloziński, Katarzyna Skórczewska, Joanna Szulc, Adam Piasecki Application of the Basalt Powder as a Filler for Polypropylene Composites With Improved Thermo-Mechanical Stability and Reduced Flammability, Polymer Engineering and Science, (2018), 10.1002/pen.24962 znane jest stosowanie pyłu bazaltowego jako napełniacza w kompozytach polipropylenowych. And from the publication Mateusz Barczewski, Kamila Salasinska, Arkadiusz Kloziński, Katarzyna Skórczewska, Joanna Szulc, Adam Piasecki Application of the Basalt Powder as a Filler for Polypropylene Composites With Improved Thermo-Mechanical Stability and Reduced Flammability, Polymer Engineering and Science, (2018), 10.1002/pen.24962, the use of basalt dust as a filler in polypropylene composites is known.

In these solutions, the key aspect is the possibility of using a filler in the form of a waste fraction of basalt dust. This form of filler does not require an additional, expensive and energy-consuming grinding procedure, as is the case with traditional mineral fillers, such as talc or chalk. Unlike the above-mentioned standard fillers, where their main role is to reduce the price of the final material, basalt particles are characterized by much greater surface hardness, the ability to nucleate the crystalline phase of the polymer and high thermal stability. The sum of these features means that basalt powder has a high ability to modify the polymer matrix even at low content, which distinguishes it from other mineral fillers.

In the case of polyamide, which is the matrix phase in the proposed solution, the addition of hard basalt particles will constitute a modifier that improves hardness and reduces abrasion. This is crucial for applications in which parts made of polyamide work together in one mechanism. Just like it is the case with gears or other types of simple mechanisms. In addition to the classic strengthening mechanism, basalt particles also have the ability to initiate the crystallization process of the polyamide matrix, therefore an increase in the content of basalt powder also improves thermomechanical resistance.

Zastosowane w wynalazku cząstki pyłu bazaltowego mają kształt sferyczny i rozmiar kilku mikrometrów, natomiast zmielone włókna bazaltowe charakteryzują się znacznym współczynnikiem L/d (długość/średnica). In publication CN107641319A, the authors indicated the possibility of using basalt dust as powdered basalt fibers, which is a natural form of any type of ground fibers, including glass and carbon fibers. The powder form differs significantly from the basalt dust used in the invention. Basalt dust is a waste in the mining process of basalt rock, this material is not subject to further processing like basalt fibers used in CN107641319A. The obvious difference between basalt dust, a powder obtained by grinding basalt fibers, is the shape of the particles for these two varieties of basalt material. The basalt dust particles used in the invention have a spherical shape and a size of several micrometers, while the ground basalt fibers are characterized by a significant L/d ratio (length/diameter). Publication CN107641319A does not refer to the specific characteristics of the basalt fiber used, with most varieties of basalt fibers having a diameter ranging from 10 to 20 μm, with a minimum length of approximately 100 μm or even over 1 mm. This results in L/d coefficients of at least 10, where the particles, despite their powder form, have a clearly fibrous character, and not spherical as in the case of basalt dust used in the invention. In this context, publication CN107641319A refers to a completely different category of materials than the invention.

W publikacji M. Barczewski i inni, POLYMER ENGINEERING & SCIENCE, listopad 2018, Application of the Basalt Powder as a Filier for Polypropylene Composites with Improved Thermo-Mechanical Stability and Reduced Flammability, DOI: 10.1002/pen.24962 autorzy wskazują na możliwość zastosowania pyłu bazaltowego w formie rozdrobnionej skały bazaltowej bez dalszych modyfikacji jako napełniacza polimerowego. Osnowę polimerową stanowi tu polipropylen zaliczany powszechnie do materiałów wielkotonażowych (tzw. commodity plastics), a dodatek pyłu bazaltowego ma typowo ekonomiczny charakter i może stanowić alternatywę dla chemicznych antypirenów i środków ograniczających palność. W przypadku wynalazku bazą polimerową jest poliamid 6 będący polimerem technicznym, o zdecydowanie odmiennych właściwościach w stosunku do polipropylenu i wymaganiach technicznych. In the publication M. Barczewski et al., POLYMER ENGINEERING & SCIENCE, November 2018, Application of the Basalt Powder as a Filier for Polypropylene Composites with Improved Thermo-Mechanical Stability and Reduced Flammability, DOI: 10.1002/pen.24962, the authors indicate the possibility of using dust basalt in the form of crushed basalt rock without further modifications as a polymer filler. The polymer matrix here is polypropylene, commonly classified as large-volume materials (so-called commodity plastics), and the addition of basalt dust is typically economical and can be an alternative to chemical flame retardants and flame retardants. In the case of the invention, the polymer base is polyamide 6, which is a technical polymer with significantly different properties than polypropylene and technical requirements. For this reason, the use of basalt dust includes mixed systems where basalt dust is used as a component of the filler system for polyamide, next to the reinforcing fibers. There are no systems of this type based on PA6 known in the state of the art.

The dedicated processing technique for the invention is the injection method, but due to the possibility of using high filler contents, shaping by pressing is also possible.

The essence of the invention is a polyamide-based composite that contains from 5% to 30% by weight of a natural filler in the form of basalt dust, which is a waste product of basalt rock processing processes. The polymer matrix is polyamide PA6. It is extremely advantageous when the composite contains from 5% to 20% by weight of fibrous filler in the form of glass, carbon, basalt fibers, or other types of reinforcement in the form of fibers with a length of 0.01 mm to 30 mm.

Napełniacz w ilości 5% do 30% wagowych i osnowę łączy się metodami wtryskiwania, wytłaczania, prasowania, walcowania lub innymi dostępnymi w przetwórstwie polimerów termoplastycznych technikami wytwarzania z osnową polimerową stanowiącą poliamid PA6.The essence of the invention is also a method of producing a polyamide-based composite. In this method, first the filler is prepared in powder form. In order to homogenize the particle size, the material is subjected to an additional grinding process using a ball mill. The basalt charge is placed in the mill chamber. Previously, the chamber was filled with the appropriate number of grinding media in the form of metal and/or ceramic balls of various diameters. The grinding process lasts from 30 minutes to 6 hours. It is possible to carry out the wet grinding process. Depending on the input parameters and grinding conditions, the diameter of basalt dust grains should be in the range from 0.5 to 10 μm. The filler in the amount of 5% to 30% by weight and the matrix are combined by injection, extrusion, pressing, rolling or other manufacturing techniques available in the processing of thermoplastic polymers with a polymer matrix consisting of polyamide PA6.

The composite based on polyamide and basalt proposed in this description is an example of a technical material with improved mechanical and thermomechanical properties, high chemical resistance and high dimensional stability. The use of this material may include loaded structural elements, including elements of machines and electrotechnical devices, and precision details requiring high dimensional accuracy and temperature resistance.
