Ujawniono sposób wytwarzania 2,4-dichlorofenolu, który polega na tym, że przez stopiony fenol przepuszcza się gazowy chlor lub wkrapla się ciekły chlorek sulfurylu, pojedynczo lub w sekwencji, w obecności katalizatora składającego się z co najmniej jednego heterocyklicznego, nasyconego związku o pierścieniu od sześcio- do dziesięcio- członowym zawierającym w pierścieniu co najmniej dwa atomy siarki, w ilości od 0,0001 do 0,01 g/g fenolu, oraz halogenku metalu wybranego spośród: żelaza, cynku, glinu i antymonu w ilości od 0,0001 do 0,01 g/g fenolu.
