Föreningen bestrålas från en 55Fe-radioisotopkälla 4, vars utsända röntgenstrålning i lagret 2 alstrar en för kalcium karak- teristisk sekundärröntgenstrålning, vars intensitet mätas med detektorer 6 och 7 på kartongens 1 båda sidor. Med 55Fe-källans utstrålade primära detektorn 5 mätes även absorption av röntgenstrålningen i kartong-beläggnings- kombinationen. Med de erhållna mätresultaten, vilka är matematiskt beroende av varje beläggningsskikts ytvikt, löses i princip med tre formler och tre variabler de båda beläggningsskiktens (CaCO3 och kaolinet) och kar- tongens ytvikt. Genom att koppla detektorerna 5, 6 och 7 direkt till en dator kan förfarandet tillämpas i on- line-anpassning vid en pappers- eller kartongbeläggnings- anordning.
