Abstract

A process for the preparation of 2-/E/-phenylmethylenecycloheptan-1- one-/E/-oxime of the formula /I/ <IMAGE> free of other isomers comprises reacting 2-/E/-phenylmethylenecycloheptan- 1-one of the formula /II/ <IMAGE> with hydroxylamine obtained "in situ" from a hydroxylamine salt in the presence of a base. The reaction is carried out in water and/or in a lower, with water unrestrictedly miscible, aliphatic alcohol, and subsequently the alcohol content of the reaction medium is adjusted to 40-60%. The compound of the formula /I/ is isolated from the reaction mixture by known methods. The 2-/E/-phenylmethylenecycloheptan- 1-one-/E/-oxime of the formula /I/serves as intermediate for the synthesis of compounds possessing valuable pharmaceutical properties.
