MILK-PAIL COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 15, 1914- Application filed March 27, 1914. Serial No. 827,552.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. Lawnnrrcn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sioux City, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Pail Covers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to means for covering milk pails.
The invention has for its object the production of a sanitary milk pail cover inexpensive in manufacture and which may be applied to an ordinary milk pail.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, of which,-
Figure 1 is an isometric perspective *iew of an article constructed in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away; Fig. 2 is a detail view of the wire inclosed by the flange; Fig. 3 is an elevation of a pail with the cover attached thereto; and Fig. l is a plan view of the same.
In the illustrations 5 represents the cover, in the form of a segment and covering the greater part of the top of the pail. The peripheral edge of the cover rests upon the upper rim of the pail; and the inner, or straight edge, is provided with an upwardly extending flange, 6, preferably integral with the cover and inclined at an acute angle thereto. The said flange is formed by doubling the edge of the cover upon itself and bendingthe two plies upwardly. The extreme edge, 7, is then soldered, or otherwise secured to the under side of the cover. The
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for fiangeis strengthened by a horizontally disposed wirc, 8, inclosed within the upper fold of the flange and having end portions 9,bent downwardly to embrace the ends of the flange, the latter being crimped around the wire. The extreme ends of the wire are bent outwardly to form short lugs, 10, which rest upon the rim of the pail. The cover is provided with a depending flange, 11, adapted to slidably engage the inner periphery of the pail.
In the process of milking the operator holds the pail with the uncovered portion from him, the cover preventing dirt and refuse falling from the side of the animal into the milk.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
A milk pail cover comprising a segment greater than a semi-circle, having a peripheral edge adapted to rest upon the rim of the pail and a straight edge parallel with the diameter of the pail, a portion of the latter edge being folded upon itself and bent upwardly to form a flange, a wire having a horizontal portion inclosed within the upper edge of the flange, and end portions inclosed within the ends of the flange, the extreme ends of the wire being bent outwardly to rest upon the rim of the pail, and a peripheral rim adapted to embrace the periphery of the pail and prevent displacement of the cover.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM XV. LAXVRENCE.
