SASH-FASTENER.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,423., dated December 28, 1858.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, PORTER A. GLADWIN, of Pawtucket, county of Bristol, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SashsFasteners; and I do hereby declare that vthe same is described and represented in the following specification and drawings; and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, I will proceed to describe the construction and operation, referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.

The nature of this improvement consists in constructing a spring catch, or fastener, secured to the meeting rail of window sashes, so that by the pressure of the linger against the thumb piece of the spring catch, at the same time the sash is lifted, will free the sash and when the sash is lowered down will be fastened by the action of the spring catch.

Gr, is the thumb piece for operating the catch. The thumb piece G is cut-into the meeting rail C, about the depth of the lip of the sash, or nearly in a line with the front edge of the parting strip and secured thereto with screws. The catch plate D, is secured on top of and flush with the lip edge of the meeting rail C.

It will be seen that by pulling the thumb piece Gr, forward, the lower easement may be raised, or the upper easement may belowered and when brought back to their place will lock or fasten, without further attention.

It is very common, in the use of the ordinary fastenings upon the meeting rail, that windows remain unfastened, which by the use of this improvement is obviated.

The cheapness of the article, its durability, and self-fastening features, constitute the principal advantages it derives over others now in use.

VVhat I claim therefore and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The employment of the perforated plate D, with the notched spring F, for 'fastening window sash, in the manner substantially as described.
