SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,028, dated July 10, 1883.

ful Improvements in Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refence being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in Which Figure lis a perspective view of my improved fence. Fig. 2 is a side view of one of thepanels, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of one of the posts.

My invention has relation to portable fences; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a portable fence of that class which may be adjusted to adapt itself to any unevenness of the ground upon which it is placed, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
The panels in the fence consist of an upper and a lower rail, A A, which are connected by uprights B B, hinged to them, so that the panel may be placed at any inclination desired. Between these rails may either wire C be drawn from one upright to the other, or rails D may be hinged at both ends to the uprights by bolts E. The ends of the rails A are notched at F, and rest upon the cross-piece G and basepiece H of the posts I, the notches clamping the cross-piece and base, holding the panels in place. I am aware that it is not new to construct a hinged brace K, screw-bolt L, and panels com-- posed of top and bottom rails, A, jointed to side bars, B, whereby the inclination of the fence may be adjusted in the direction of its length, as well as crosswise.
