CUFF-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,559, dated August 4, 1885.

Application filed January 10, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL W. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodbridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and. exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany. ing drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to facilitate the adjustment of the fastener or cuff-holder upon the cuff, to adapt the same to be used in connection with a greater variety of cuffbuttons,and to reduce the cost of construction.

It consists in the arrangements and combinations of parts substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a shirt-sleeve and a cuff fastened or secured thereto by means of my improved fastener or holder, which latter is shown in side elevation. Fig. 2 is asectional view of the hinged portions or levers thereof. Fig. 8 is a plan of one of said levers, illustrating the arrangement of the spring whereby the graspingjaws of the fastener are held together. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a portion of a cuff, showing a portion of the device in elevation, in connection with an ordinary cuff-button; and Fig. 5 is a front view of a peculiar button which I prefer to use with the holder.

which it bears, a loop to receive and hold the shank of the button f, the extremity of the said end being again bent, as at e, to form a mouth with-the said lever into whichthe button-shank is thrust in opening the loop and inserting thesaid shank.

In connection with the end bent as at e e, I prefer to use the button f with a looped shank formed as shown in Fig. 5.

To adapt the fastener to be used with other buttons than" the one described, I bend the end of one of the levers to form a hook q, adapted to catch into the front button-hole of the cuff, as illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, where it is held by the shank of the cuff-button abutting against the end thereof. The end of the hooked portion may be notched, as at t, to receive the said shank and prevent lateral displacement, as will be understood upon reference to Figs. 3 and 4.

The general arrangement of the levers is similar to that shown and described in the specification and drawings of a prior application. filed June 20, 1884, Serial No. 135,493, and patented January 27, 1885, No. 311,286.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. The combination, withthe grasping-levers a a, of the spring having the ends bearing oppositely thereagainst, one of said ends being provided with the bends e'e, which form, with one of the levers, a mouth and loop, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In combination, the levers a a, one of which is provided with a hook, g, notched at the turn, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In combination with the grasping-levers a a, pivoted together by the pin 0, a spiral spring arranged on said pin, the ends of which bear outwardly and oppositely upon said 1evers, one of said ends being bent, as at e, to form a loop or eye with one of said levers to receive the looped shank of the button f, sub

stantially as set forth.
