Cl. 206-59 3 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A package and method for making same for wrapping rolled articles such as, for example, carpets, drapery material and the like, comprising core means around which the carpet or other article is rolled, a cover such as a paper or burlap cover around the rolled carpet or other article, gathered on each end thereof and provided with slits through which are fitted the ends of the core which protrude from the rolled material. End collars are placed over the core ends and held in place. A hot melt seal may be used as the holding means, and tag means may also be provided to be held against the package by means of one of the end collars.

This invention relates to a novel packaging and covering means for rolled materials such as carpeting, drapery material and the like, and to the method of making such packages. Certain rolled materials, especially heavy materials such as carpets, are usually packaged for shipment by rolling same and then covering with paper or burlap which is then sewn or tied around the roll.

It is an object of this invention to provide packaging means and a method for packing rolled materials which will provide a more secure package and better protection for the goods to be packaged.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the specification hereinbelow. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

The invention comprises a core means 10 which may be in the form of a hollow cardboard core. Core means 10 may also be made of any other material, hollow or solid.

The core means 10 should be somewhat larger than the width of the material to be rolled into the package. For example, the material used as an illustration in this invention would be a carpet material approximately 4 /2 to feet in width and 100 feet in length. These dimensions are given by way of illustration only and other sizes of carpet, or other rollable materials, may be incorporated in the concept of the invention. A roll of such material about 5 feet long and 2 to 3 feet in diameter is represented by reference numeral 12 as being rolled around core means 10. Reference numerals 14 indicate the ends of the core means 10, and reference to FIG. 2 will show that the ends 14 protrude on both sides from the rolled carpet 12 since the core means is longer than the length of the rolled carpet 12. This is provided so that collar means may be used as a fastening means as will be set forth hereinbelow.

Reference numeral 16 indicates the covering means such as fiberglassed reinforced paper or burlap, or other suitable material which is wrapped around the rolled carpet 12 in the finished invention. The cover should be of sufiicient length to be wrapped at least once around the roll 12 and of sufiicient Width so that the edges 18 may be gathered around the ends 20 of the rolled carpet 12.

Inside the edges 18, we have provided a plurality of slits 22 which are placed over protruding ends 14 of core means 10 when the material of the cover 16 are gathered around ends 20 of the rolled carpet. The ends 18 are then secured by collar means 24 which are slide fitted over ends 14. The collar means 24 may be snug fitted over the core ends by any suitable means or fastened to the core ends by any suitable means in a manner which maintains the gathered ends 18 of the cover means in proper place. A hot melt adhesive such as Hot Melt Adhesive F696 sold by Parachem Southern, Inc., of Greenville, S.C., may be applied to the core means ends 14 between the core ends 14 and the inside of the collar means '24 to securely fasten the collar means in position. One way of doing this is by dipping the ends 14 of the core means into the hot melt material and then slipping collar 24 over the core end. This arrangement places the collar means 24 in position outside the gathered ends 18 and maintains the covering means 16 in a uniform position around the ends 20 of the rolled carpet 12. In a package of the type described, when the slits 22 are in proper position around the ends 14 of the core means 10, it is most difficult to displace the cover, and it will be held securely in place.

In a package of the prior art, the paper or burlap or other cover means is twisted at random around the ends of the carpet roll, and when the package is lifted or pulled by grasping the cover means, it may be displaced destroying the package and injuring the goods. In the package of the invention, the cover is securely held in position and displacement by reason of pulling or jouncing is substantially minimized.

At the left end of FIG. 2 of the drawings, we show an alternate form of the invention which includes an inner end cover 28. Only one inner end cover 28 is shown at the left end of FIG. 2, but it is to be understood that a similar inner end cover 28 may be positioned at the other end of the package in a similar manner. The inner end covers 28 are in the form of discs such as cardboard discs and having a central opening 30 adapted to slide fit over an end 14 of the core means 10. The inner end cover means 28 would be placed against an end 20 of the rolled carpet 12 before gathering and positioning edges 18 of the cover 16.

In FIG. 4 of the drawings, we show a tag means 32 having a hole or opening 34. The tag means 32 may be incorporated into the package by slipping opening 34 over an end 14 after the edges 18 have been gathered and positioned, and then placing collar 24 over tag means 34 and then applying the hot melt seal 26. Any information needed in connection with the rolled and wrapped article can be printed on the tag means 32 which provides a neat and readily legible tag for the package which will not roll or shift around as would a tag placed on by a wire or cord.

The cover 16 may be fiberglassed reinforced paper or burlap as described, or any other material suitable to the packaging of the goods to be packaged.

While we have described our invention in its preferred forms, there are other forms which it may take without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Wherefore we claim:

1. A package for rolled articles comprising core means on which to roll a rollable article to be wrapped, said core means being a relatively greater length than the rolled length of the article to be wrapped, cover means with which to cover the rolled article when wrapped, and collar means adapted to fit over the extending ends of the core means; wherein the said cover means comprises a plurality of slits relatively near its ends extending from points within said cover means ends towards the center of said cover means and in which said cover means is wrapped around said rolled article and gathered over the ends of the rolled article with said slits extending over and fitted around said core means ends, with said collar means being fitted over said core means ends outside of said cover means end slits; in which the collar means fitted over the core means is maintained in position by means of a hot melt material positioned between at least a portion of the area between said collar means and said core means.

2. The package as defined in claim 1 which also comprises at least one inner end cover placed in end facing relationship to the material to be rolled, and having an opening corresponding to the width of the core means and being fitted by means of said opening around said core means.

3. The package as defined in claim 2 which further comprises at least one tag means having an opening 4 adapted to fit around said core means end and being positioned by means of said opening around said core means at an end of said package between said collar means and said cover means.
