SHlRT AND METHOD 0f ATTACHING SUPPLEMENTAL BOSOMS THERETO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,638, dated January 4, 186 7.
Application filed May 18, 1886. Serial No.202,559. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BU'rz', a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Easton,in the county of Northampton and State of Pen n sylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts and Supplementary Bosoms and Methods of Making the Latter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of a shirt provided with my improved facing and adjustable supplemental bosom, one-half of the bosom being removed to show the method of securing the two together. Fig. 2 is a back view of the supplemental bosom detached. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same on line x x, and Fig. 4 isa rear perspective View of the neckband of the shirt.
This invention relates to shirts and supple mental bosoms; and it consists in the improved construction of the shirts and in the improved method of making the bosoms, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth,
In the accompanying drawings, in which the same letters-of reference indicate correspondbody of the shirt, having a neckband, B, and the ordinary slit or opening, 0, in front, although it may be made to open at the back or upon the shoulders. Secured to the front upon each side of the slit or opening 0 is a continuous facing, D, consisting of an extra thickness of linen or other material of which the shirt is composed. The intermediate portion of this facing is secured to theshirt by means of. two rows of stitching, E and F, upon each side of the opening 0, which forms an imitation bosom, or the facing may be provided with the stitching without having the stitching connecting it with the body of the shirt; or, if desired, it may be dispensed with entirely.
Upon each side of the opening Gin the shirtfront is a row of button-holes, in which are placed the studs G, by means of which the supplemental bosom is retained in position, or ordinary buttons can be used, as is done to secure the two parts of the shirt together at the opening 0. The neckband B is provided upon each side of the neck with a notch, S, which permits smaller-sized collars to be used with the hand without folding or wrinkling it, and with a loop, H, under which the tabs or ends I of the neckband of the supplemental bosom are secured, and at its middle front por-' tion with the ordinary button-hole. If desired, however, each of these loops may be of the neckbands of the supplemental bosom are secured. By the use of the tabs or loops upon the outside of the neckband the stud is prevented from rubbing or chafing the person of the wearer.
' Secured to the buttons or studs upon the front of the shirt is an adjustable supplemental bosom, K, the neckband L of which is of such length and slope as to adapt it to be used with a shirt the neckband of which is of a different size and slope, as fully set forth in my former patents. This bosom K is composed 'of an outer or front portion, M, of linen, which can be made plain or plaited, as desired, and a back portion or lining, N, of a coarser heavier article than the front portion. To the under side or back of this lining are secured flies or tabs 0, having button-holes in them, by means of which they can be secured to the but tons or studs G on the shirt-front. These flies or tabs can be made integral with the lining Nof the bosom, but large enough so that its outer edge can be folded back upon itself with a fan-fold about one-half an inch wide, and be secured by a row of stitching, Q, through the inner edge of the fold to the portion M near its edge, and then securing the two outer edges of M and N together by another row of.
ICO
one upon each side of the central portion, the
' lower end of said band being provided with a button-hole and having its intermediate portion passed through the button-holes in the fly.
By the use of my invention an adjustable supplemental bosom can be held in position upon the front of the shirt as smoothly and securely as though it were made apart of it in the usual manner, and at the same time it can be ea'sily and quickly removed for any purpose and another put in its place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1 1. The combination of a shirt the neckband of which is provided with a notch upon each side of the neck, and a supplemental bosom the ends of the band of which are provided with means for securing them to the neck band.
2. The hereinbefore-described method of making a supplementary bosom for shirts, conisting in first forming the outer ply thereof of a suitable size, then forming the lining or inner ply thereof of a larger size, then folding the outer edge of the latter back upon itself in a fan-fold until the lining-ply has a peripheral boundary coinciding with that of the outer ply, and then sewing the lining-ply to the outer ply by a series of stitches, which pass through both plies at the innermost line of the folded edge of the lining, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL BUTZ.
