IMPROVED PEGGlNG-JACK.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,095. dated January 16, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBION K. WASHBURN, of Bridgewater, of the county of Plymouth and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Begging-Jacks; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specilication and represented in the accompanying drawings, of Which- Figure l is a plan, and Fig. 2 a transverse section, of apegging-jack provided with my improvement.

The nature of myinvention consists in a peculiar arrangement of' the mechanism for actuating the heel-supporter.

In the drawings, A denotes a circular bedplate, having two standards, a a, projecting upward from it at its edge, and arranged for supporting the journals of the vibrating heelsupporter'B.

C is the tOesuppOrter, which is lixed to the bed-plate by a clamp-screw, D, and a nut, E. The said toe-supporter should have an opening, b, leading through it, such opening being made ot' sufficient size to receive a post, F, erected on the plate A and arranged thereon,

as shown in Fig. 2. Another and shorter post, G, extends from the bed-plate A and near to the lower part of the heel-supporter B. An actuator, H, consisting of a long metallic rod furnished at one end with a screw, c, and at the other with a handle, d, goes through the upper part of the post F and screws through 1 the post G and against the lower portion, e, of the heel-supporter B.

When the jack is in use the projection F of the heel-supporter enters the shoe-last, which, with the shoe thereon, is further sustained by the toe-supporter C. 0n laying hold ot' the handle d and revolving the actuator the heelsupporter may be moved so as to force the shoe and last down upon the toe-supporter in a manner to confine the said last to the jack.

When the actuator is arranged in rear of the heel-supporter it is liable to become so covered by the upper leather of the shoe, particularly when the latter is what is termed a balmorah as to be diftcult ot' access. arranging it in my improved manner it or its handle becomes entirely out ot' the way ot' the shoe, and thus can be easily laid hold of. The said actuator has or should have a bearing on the post F.

I claim as my invention- The improved arrangement ot' the actuator H relatively to the heel and toe supporters, such actuator under such arrangement being caused to pass through the toesupporter and operate against the front part of the heelsupporter, substantially as hereinbefore explained.
