Magier-w THOMAS R. EVANS,OFl PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. Laws Patent No. 89,473, dated April 27,1869.
IMPRO'VED SHOE-TREE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the nemo.
To all lwhom it 'may conce/rn Beit known that I, THOMAS R. EVANS, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Revolving Shoe-Tree; and I do hereby declare the ,following to be a-full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists in the combination, with a revolving shoe-tree, (the leg of which is formed in one.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invent-ion, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved revolving shoe-tree, and v Figure 2, a sectional plan view of a portion of the same.
The horizontal 'spindle A, to which the shoe-tree B is secured, is arranged to turn in a tubular bearing, a, formed on the upper portion of a metal bracket, F, which is secured to the edge of a table or bench, X, shown in red lines.
To the rear end of the spindle A is secured a cogwheel, C, against one edge of which bears a springplate, D, which is attached to the lower portion of the bracket F, a lug or projection, b, of this springplate entering the space between two of the teeth of the said'oog-wheel, and preventing the latter or its -spindle from turning until the lng is withdrawn.
The shoe-tree is secured to a disk, f, at the front end of the spindle A, by screws h h, a stem, t', (or continuation of the spindle,) entering an opening in the said shoe-tree, and relieving the strain n-pon the screws.
The shoe-tree consists of but two portions, a legpiece, m, and toe-piece, m', the latter having a dovetailed tongue, x, adapted to a corresponding recess of the former.
The method of using the above instrument is as follows: Y
The toe-piece 'mf is first inserted into the shoe which is to be worked upon, and is followed by the leg-piece m, the two portions beingconnected together, within the shoe, by means of the dovetailed tongue and recess.
The shoe-tree being perfectly rigid and prevented from turningby means of the spring-pawl D and cog# wheel, the shoe can be rubbed and finished with the greatest facility, and when it is desired to slightly turn the instrument in order to work upon a dierent portion of the shoe, all that is necessary is to withdraw the lug b from between the teeth of the cogwheel, and to turn the latter and shoe-tree to therequired position, after which the spring-pawl is released in order that it may retain the cog-wheel. as before.
An important part of my invention is the forming of the leg of the shoe-tree iu one piece, instead ofin several pieces with intermediate wedges, as heretofore, this plan enabling me to nish a shoe more rapidly, and with greater neatness, than where the rubbing-snrface is broken and ridged by joints and wedges.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patento The combination, with a revolving shoe-tree, of a. pawl and ratchet-wheel, arranged `and, operating snb. stant-ially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOS. R. EVANS.
Witnesses J onN WHITE, HARRY SMITH.
