H. W. JONES.
LINK CUFF. No. 583,623. Patented June 1,1897.
&
ATTORNEY-)7 UNITED STATES HARRY IVALTER JONES, OF GLENS FALLS, NEWV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE JOSEPH FOWVLER SHIRT AND COLLAR COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
LINK-CU FF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,623, dated June 1, 1897.
Application filed August 8, 1896- Serial No. 602,196. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY WALTER JONES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Glens Falls, in the county of Warren and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Link-Ouffs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar figures of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
This invention relates to cuffs, and particularly to that class of cuffs with which linkbuttons are employed; and the object thereof is to provide means to facilitate the operation of reversing the cufi or changing the ends thereof, a further object being to provide a cuff with a folding band which is secured to or formed on or in connection with the cuff, as hereinafter described, and is free to fold in either direction, said band being adapted to serve for connecting the cuff with the shirtsleeve, wherebywhen one edge of the cufi becomes soiled the wearer may turn the band so as to present the other edge of the cuff for use without removing the cufi-buttons, this operation being accomplished by simply pushing the band through the roll of the cuff while the buttons are in place, and by means of this arrangement a double service of the cuif is obtained with but one adjustment of the buttons.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the cuif proper; Fig. 2, a similar view of the band by which it is connected with the sleeve; Fig. 3, a similar view of the band and the cuff connected according to my invention; Fig. 4, a plan view of the back facing of the cuff and the band formed integrally. Figs. 5 and 6 are side views of two separate blanks from which the back facing of the cuff and band are formed, and Fig. 7 a back view of a cuff pro vided with a back facing and band made as shown either in Fig. 4 or in Figs. 5 and 6.
In the practice of my invention, reference being made to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, I provide a cuff 5, which may be of any desired shape or form and which is provided at each end and centrally thereof wit-h buttonholes 6, which are intended to serve as buttonholes for a link-button, and in Fig. 2 I have shown a band which is formed or composed of a separate part, as shown at '7, and which is provided at each end with a buttonhole 8, by which it is connected with the sleeve, and which may also be provided centrally with another buttonhole 9 for the same purpose.
The outer edge of the band is straight and shorter than the body portion thereof, as shown at 10, and in practice this straight portion of the band is stitched to the cuff centrally and longitudinally thereof, as shown at 11 in Fig. 3, or the edge thereof may be passed through a central longitudinal slot formed in the back facing of the cuff and stitched thereto.
As thus constructed it will be seen that the band is free to swing or to be turned at the center of the cuff and may be turned toward either edge thereof, and by this means either edge of the cuff may be presented or directed to the front, and when one edge of the cuff is soiled the band may be turned as above described, so as to present the other edge of the cuff.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a blank which constitutes the back facing of the cuff and also the band, the back facing of the cuff consisting of two separate parts 14, which are similar in form, and the band consisting of two similar parts 15, and in practice this blank is folded along the central line 16 and stitched along the dotted lines 18, and the device is then turned inside out and the parts 14 are then separated and stitched to the cuff, as shown in Fig. 7, and the parts 15, when folded together as described, constitute the band'7, by which the cuff is connected With the sleeve or the wristband thereof, and said band 7 is connected with the longitudinal center of the cuff, as clearly shown in Fig. 7, and also as shown in Fig. 3.
In Figs. 5 and 6 the blank shown in Fig. 4 is composed of two pieces which are exactly similar in form and which together constitute or form the back facing of the cuff and the band 7, and in practice these two pieces are placed together and stitched together along the dotted lines Band 19, after which the device is turned inside out and stitched along the line 17, and the parts 14 are separated and stitched to the back of the cuif, as shown in Fig. 7.
It will thus be seen that in all the modifications shown the band proper by which the cuff is connected with the sleeve or the wristband thereof is connected with the cuff along the longitudinal center thereof, and this connection is made in the construction shown in Figs. 4: to 7, inclusive, by stitching the parts 14 to the back of the cuff along the dotted line 20 at each side of the cuff, the dotted lines 21 at the ends thereof, and at each side of the buttonhole 6, as shown at 23, and it will also be seen that in each form of construction the band may be turned or folded so as to present either edge of the cuif.
from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The herein-described cuff comprising the body portion provided centrally at each end thereof with a buttonhole, and a band portion composed of a separate part and also provided at each end with a buttonhole, the said band havinga straight inner edge shorter than its body portion, said inner edge being longitudinally secured to the bodyportion of the cuif in line with the buttonholes thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 5th day of August, 1896.
HARRY IVALTER JONES.
