To all whom 'it may concer/n:
Be it known that we, ERVIA PLINTEN ZAHNTER and JACOB KUNZMANN, citizens of the United States, residing at Highland, in the county of San Bernardino and State of have invented new and useful 1mprovements in Axles, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention pertains to axles; and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous construction hereinafter described and claimed.
1n the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification: Figure 1 is a view, plartly in elevation and partly in section, s owing the construction constituting the preferred embodiment of our invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in both views of the drawings, referring to which:
A is the axle spindle. This spindle is provided with a collar a in which is a key-seat b; and it is also provided with a thread c, an intermediate reduced portion d, a reduced and threaded outer end e, and a lubricant ductf which communicates with and extends outward from the space formed by the intermediate reduced portion d. The said duct f preferably extends to the center of the outer end of the spindle, and is provided adjacent to said end with a chamber g in which is a spring-backed valve 7L, the office of which is to lessen the liability of dust or the like finding its way into the space formed by the spindle reduction d.
B is a skein, of steel or other suitable material, removably arranged on the spindle A. The said skein B is interiorly of even diameter except at its inner end where it is enlarged and tapered to fit the tapered collar a. 1t is interiorly threaded ati to engage the spindle thread c, whereby it is removably secured on the spindle, and is provided at its outer end with an inwardly directed flange j, threaded at 7c to engage the threaded end e of the spindle and assist in holding the skein on the spindle. In the outer end of the skeinB are seats or indentures Z for the engagement of a spanner wrench, and in the inner end of said skein is a seat m opposed to the seat l; in the collar a and designed to receive a removable key O through the medium of which the skein is locked against turning on the spindle. It
will also be noted by reference to Fig. 1 that the skein B is provided adjacent to its inner end with an outwardly directed7 circular flange n, the purpose of which will be presa ently pointed out.
D is a hub box arranged on and snugly fitting the skein B. This box is provided in its inner end with a circular groove p to receive the skein fiange n with a view of excluding dust, and its outer end is extended outward beyond the outer end of the skein, as shown. A nut is provided for retaining the box D on the skein B. The said nut is interiorly threaded at r to receive the threaded end e of spindle A, and is provided in its inner side `with a circular groove s to receive the out- Awardly projecting portion of the box D in order to exclude dust. 1n the nut, preferably at the center thereof, is an oiling aperture t which is normally occupied by a screw u. By removing the screw u and introducing the spout of an oiling can in the aperture so as to displace the valve h, it willbe seen that the space formed between the spindle A and skein B by the reduction of the former may be conveniently supplied with lubricant without the necessity o` taking the wheel from the axle; and it will also be seen that the lubricant will pass through an aperture w in the lower portion of the skein and profusely lubricate the box D and reduce to a minimum the friction incident to rotation of the same on the skein B. When in position in the aperture t, the closure screw u obviously assists the valve h in excluding dust and other foreign substance from the lubricant duct f By virtue of the provision of the removable skein B it will be noted that the spindle A is protected against wear; and it will also be noted that when the skein is worn or otherwise impaired it may be readily removed and replaced with a new skein without injury to the spindle. 1t will further be appreciated that the skein B renders the axle as a whole strong and durable, and that it admits of the axle spindle being made of iron or of a low grade of steel.
The construction herein shown and described constitutes the preferred embodiment of our invention, but it is obvious that in practice such changes or modifications may be made as fairly fall within the scope of our invention as claimed.
Having described our invention, what we claim anddesire to secure by Letters-Patent, 1s:
1. In an axle, the combination with a spindle having a shoulder at its inner end and a thread adjacent to said shoulder and also havingfa reduced and threaded outer end of a skein removably arranged on the spindle and having an interior thread to engage the inner thread of the spindle and also having an inwardly-directed and threaded flange at its outer end engaging the reduced and threaded outer end of the spindle.
2. The combination in an axle, of a spindle having a shoulder at its inner end, in which is a key seat, and a thread adjacent to saidA shoulder, and also having a reduced andy threaded outer end, a skein removably arranged on the spindle and having an interior thread to engage the inner thread of the spindle, and an inwardly-directed and'threaded flange at its outer end engaging the reduced and threaded outer end of the spindle, and also having a key seat in its inner endf opposed to that of the collar, and a key removably arranged in the opposed key-seats in the collar andskein.
3. The combination of an axle spindle having a shoulder at its inner end and a thread adjacent to said shoulder and also having a reduced and threaded outer end, a skein removably arranged on the spindle and having an interior thread to engage the inner thread ofthe spindle, and an inwardly-directed and threaded flange atits outer end engaging the reduced and threaded outer end of the spindle, and also having an outwardly-directed circular flange on its inner portion, a hub box arranged on and projecting beyond the outer end or the skein and having a circular groove in its inner end receiving the circular flange of the skein, and a nut mounted on the reduced outer end of the spindle and having a circular groove in its inner side receiving the projecting portion of the box.
