Thus, in the case of, say, a fractured limb, a heavy gauge material will be required in order totally to immobilise the limb in question. In the case of a moderate sprain, on the other hand, a much less thick (and thus a much less stiff) material will be adequate. It is likely, therefore, that materials having a thickness in the range 1 to 4mm will be adequate for most purposes in accordance with the invention.

Abstract

Le matériau décrit de fabrication d'attelle/plâtre orthopédique se compose d'un poids molaire élevé de polyester combiné à une charge cellulosique. Ledit matériau peut être moulé à une température de l'ordre de 55 à 70 °C et devient autocollant à cette température. Il présente un poids de l'ordre de 0,75 à 4,0 kg/m2, une densité de l'ordre de 900 à 1200 kg/m3, et un module d'au moins 350 mPa à la température ambiante. Ledit polyester est de préférence un adipate de polyhexaméthylène ou une polyepsilon-caprolactone. La charge cellulosique peut être une combinaison de coquilles d'amandes broyées, de noyaux d'olives broyés et de farine de bois. Le polyester selon l'invention se présente, de préférence, sous forme de poudre. Dans ce cas, le polyester et la charge présentent généralement une répartition granulométrique similaire ou presque. Si on le désire, on peut incorporer une couche de tissu tel qu'un tissu polyester léger au niveau ou à proximité d'une surface du polyester/matériau de charge.
